I used to own a Part 5. I remember it being a special copy as the paint job was off the charts, I was expecting to get a basic paint job as he usually does but my old copy may have been some kind of promo copy. I was offered 520$ for it ! I canāt remember another replica hockey mask that sold for this much.
Iām thrilled that you made this thread!! Iāve been wanting one of these for a while but was hesitant since he says theyāre from the film mold but has several misplaced vent holes and such. When I asked he got pretty defensive lol.
I love my DMC Roy. I know there was a lot of questions about the lower left air vents and the ācurveā to them on the Hockey Mask but you can see the Roy mask on the cover Fangoria and from that shot tooā¦they angle. Both the Undermask and Hockey Mask came from DMC about 1 month ago. I have on order a hallucination Jason, with the straps on the inside coming as well too.
Not sure what youāre seeing Billy, but the movie mask definitely didnāt have the DMC curved holes. Iām guessing the DMC is a badly executed recast since the whole lower half looks wrong and the mask is a little bloated all around.
Iāve talked to David via email and heās a cool guy, always really forthcoming about movie/mask info⦠but the DMC looks way off to be movie mold. Could have been badly repaired at some point I guess.
Good stuff guys! When you say curved holes, what do you mean? There are only a few things I see off. Have either of you made a comparison photo highlighting differences besides the one above? I think if the straps were tighter on a head it might look better.
David Millerās masks were some of the first I encountered back in 2002. As much nostalgia as they bring me, I donāt think we can ever confidently access that these are from any kind of āmovie moldā. There are simply too many differences in the form and contour to establish any kind of connection. In fact, all of the products on his website use to say āfrom authentic movie moldsā, even the Part 4 under mask (which we know is blatantly false). That said, I canāt see a reason for David to lie about having the movie buck, but Iām not persuaded by his blanks to believe it. Hereās a great photo from Aaron Lewisās collection.
If it were tighter on a head there may be more similarities. According to David,
"As for the Hockey mask # 5, on-set lighting, camera lenses, filming angles and even how tight the straps are play a major role in how something looks on film and how they look in real life. These are from the original vacuform mold.
During production and itās crazy, hectic schedule, there were 2 fibreglass masks made and worn for a few scenes. The producers asked David Miller, while he was working at ReelFX to make a few more because 1 of the fibreglass masks was crushed AND the stunt people were complaining that the other fibreglass mask was too heavy. It had to be glued on to stay on the persons head. David suggested vacuforming because it was thinner and lightweight. So, over the weekend when they werenāt filming, David took the remaining fibreglass mask, made a mold of the inside and vacuformed 8 of them. Also, he painted all of them to match the original.
So, we still have the same mold that David made for the film. At that time, the original was retired and Davidās vacuform masks were used for the remainder of filming. The stuntmen loved them."
You would have to match the added trim perfectly to a FS / JDF blank to settle this debate. If anyone has both on hand to do this, Iām sure the community would greatly appreciate!
I canāt say the notion of them recasting the inside of a fiberglass mask makes much sense to me⦠possibly the outside- if anything, that makes more sense that David Miller would have recasted the outside of either fiberglass or a vacu-formed plastic mask which leads to the rounder, fatter nose and the vent hole warpage/curvature.
