So this turned into a post about this DP 86’. The question, Don Post The Mask to re paint or not to re paint? Wondering what the talented artists on here think should be or can be done with this mask? I have had it for a couple years stuffed and powdered out of sunlight climate controlled environment and never really worn. I believe it has spray paint sprayed on it due to cracking in the paint. Some in the hair also. Is there a way to remove this? Should I leave it alone? Have it repainted? I want to preserve it as it seems to be in amazing condition. More and Better pics on page 2. Any help suggestions or what not are appreciated.
Dude you have a DP 86 there not an 03 Both fantastic brother
Thanks. I knew it resembled an 86’ but it doesn’t say 1986 on it I thought it was a re release of the mask. But I can’t find info on it. The auction I got it from just said Don Post The Mask. Got it for like $20. Would like a reprint as it has off whit spray paint that is cracking on it.
That would be one hell of a score for an 86’
I have an 86’ and it doesn’t look like that at all.
Check the neck slit in the back for a Don Post stamp/badge
If that is an 86’ then someone painted it. The eyebrows are not White on the 85/86 DP
I don’t believe it has 1986 stamped anywhere on it. I will check when I get home. It definitely has be painted it is off white and has overspray in the hair. But the back of the neck is bright white like the inside of the mask. And the one eyebrow is showing through under the off white paint. Off white is also cracking. I think that paint may give it the look of the 86’ more but it seems to be in almost new condition other than that paint and a little misshaped spot near the hairline and a slight fold on the neck.
Also it seems thinner than my memory of the 86’ I had way back. Not super thin like newer don post but still thinner.
member Anthony had an 85 which didn’t have a stamp so yours could be the same case. Might have depended which factory they came from as to which were stamped. The eye brows have defo been repainted but that is defo an 86 mask buddy BIG CONGRATS
That looks a lot like the one I recently inquired about, but with painted eyes.
Looking more closely at it and looking at mine, I think you do have a PAINTED 86’
I can see the small spot of the eyebrow that is chipped away showing the Brown. I can also see the forehead wrinkles.
I will say I have never heard of a DP not having a badge though. That’s a new one to me. One would think DP would never allow such a thing no matter where it was produced.
I would leave it be though because trying to remove the paint will probably ruin the latex. It isn’t the strongest latex ever used. My mask has a ‘spongy’ feeling to it as it got older.
Very similar. Do you have a link to your post about that mask?
Insanity yeah it definitely has brow that was under there just the one spot peaking through. The neck kinda almost looks like it has a throat Adam’s apple are hard to explain. Might be misshaping? I will take a bunch of pics stuffed and not stuffed when I get home. And check for stamping thought I am pretty sure it doesn’t have 86’ or anything for that matter. Thanks for the help guys.
Try and get some outside shots in natural light to.
Either way its a nice mask. $20 is a good deal and I would not have hesitated on it even if it were an oddball maker.
I can tell you it is DEFO an 86. But if you really want to confirm shoot Kaizu a pm. He is an expert with vintage DP Myers/ Kirk masks
I think it’s pretty safe to say it is an 86’
I can match the forehead wrinkles on it to mine in my picture above. Just someone painted it as he said it has overspray in the hair. I just dont get the no badge thing. He may be mistaken but he said he will check. I just cant imagine a DP mask not having a badge.
Ill do a bunch of shots when I get home. Don’t quote me on the 20 dollar price tag it was probably about two years ago but I knowi did not pay much 20 maybe 30. I wasn’t sure what mask it was think it was listed 03’ but looked a lot like the 86’ so I went after it.
Insanity like i said Anthony on here had an 85 which didn’t have a stamp so its not really unusual. Its probably from a different factory.
pics up in a few minutes. it has two sets of stamps one set on each side of the neck slit. hard to make out but definitely says don post mask made in china on one side other side says don post again with a copyright symbol and then i cannot make out the rest. no year that i can make out.
Marcus,
I have to disagree with you here.
Every licensed DP mask has a stamp/badge.
Anthony has an 84’ mask which was NOT officially licensed hence no stamp.
actually upon looking at the pics I can see what i think is 1986 on it but with my old man (32 years) eyes I guess i couldn’t ever mke it out.
WRONG! his was an 85. you can even pm him
