I’ve been meaning to do this for ages, but never got around to it. I used the template from CostumeBot and marked it on a thin sheet of wood. After much cutting and sanding, here’s the result so far. It’ll be about 19 inches total. The template is next to it.
I just used that same template with a groove cut in it for a special effects knife. I hit it with a little permawet blood and I have taken some pretty cool pics with it.
I’m keeping this mostly simple. I worked the 'blade ’ for a while with a mouse sander, dremel, and sandpaper to give the sharp side a little shape.
I’ll be making the handles and guard with craft foam that I’ll harden with pva glue and paint like wood. I’m also issuing basic brass brads for the hardware. Like I said, simple. Here I’ve measured and shaped one side of the handle. After both sides are done, I’ll pva it and give it some wood texture.
Did a little finishing on the handles. After coating the foam with pva glue, I scratched some texture into it and painted. Dark brown followed by a light brown and then a black wash. Finally, one more coat of brown with a satin finish. Gives it a bit of a vintage polished wood look. Not bad for foam. Hard to capture a good picture.
I like your way better. I just don’t have a lot of wood cutting tools. So, I’m using what I have. Lots of foam laying around while I build some comic Dredd armor. [emoji12]
All I use is a jigsaw and then a palm sander, which is so much easier, I used to hand sand everything for hours lol. Once you make a bunch you keep finding and thinking of ways to make it easier to do. The only part I don’t like doing is drilling the holes for the rivets. One time I was holding the knife in the wrong spot and proceeded to drill a hole in my pinky finger. I had to fucking reverse the drill to get it out. You wanna talk about horrible fucking pain lol it was right in the joint, I still cant bend my pinky right lol I think I still have that knife too, and I left the damage on the handle as a reminder to keep my damn digits out of the way, I really need to invest in a drill press, I find myself not wanting to make knives with rivets anymore lol
Well, for my first attempt I’m… satisfied. I need to get better at working with the wood filler and primer. But this is certainly better then any commercially available props, and works well in low light and from a distance. I may gore this one up with perma blood, but we’ll see.
