After sharing it, mask maker friend Aaron Lewis shared me this from an article from Gorezone during the production of H4.
One theory that came up during this discussion was that the school scene mask was one of the surviving Tramers from H2 and was painted a flesh tone color. The H4 crew made some adjustments and supposedly some bad recasts for back ups. Warlock stated both Tramers died in the fire but who knows.
The writer for H4 stated that they had a mask from H1/2 and when he arrived on the first day of shoot, they had a mask with white hair.
Another theory that had came up in the past by Billy K was that the H4 may have been made using an earlier version of the Don Post THE MASK which was supposedly made from recasting a 75 kirk; info provided by Josh/Sheriff Bracket.
Made another morph pic using Billy’s and Josh’s pics which were provided in the past.
Some interesting results.
But none of this really answers everything.
Which leads to the question of why the H4 mask had eyebrows and sideburns. The writer explains in the commentary that they had THE mask from H1/2. Keep in mind Bill Malone made back-ups for the production of H1 and KEPT one for himself. That certain mask he kept was later borrowed for the production of H4 and was never seen again. This mask had brows and sideburns. Unless the crew members of H4 referenced these specs from the Don Post THE MASK, the mystery just gets deeper…
Bill Malone mask on the right.
So what was exactly on set? A Tramer, the Bill Malone Myers or an early version of the DP MASK…Or all three??
Update***
Another interesting trivia I just heard from a member here…
when i talked to George Wilbur in 2010 i was told by him that the mask from the first 2 movies was on set but it wasn’t used…he said the producer had an overweight friend who came on set and asked if he could wear the mask. The producer said yes and he stretched the jawline out to bad that they couldn’t use it and had to make new ones. he mentioned they had a few captain kirk masks as well…
Interesting they actually had the original hero on set for H4. My buddy and me just watched the film last night for our weekly billiards night. We’re going through the whole series and 4 was next on the list.
I have to say though, the H4 mask is my least favorite of them all. I’ve always made the comment that it looks like they walked into a Rite Aid around Halloween time and bought it for $10 and painted the hair and eye brows darker. With the OP mentioning THE MASK, ironic that it could very well be true. IMO, there’s nothing creepy about it at all. It just looks silly and cartoonish. Almost Asian in a way. It really takes away from what is otherwise a fantastic sequel.
Huh. I posted the same article from Gorezone about 3 or 4 years ago maybe. I think my DPS The Mask theory was, is and will always be, the true story. If you look at the morph pix, you can easily see it’s what they used. The production people bugged Don so much that he decided not to help them, so they went out and purchased The Mask from DPS and made their own mask.
Remember, DPS wanted the license to Myers and Trancas was not wanting to deal with DPS; so it all fits in together nicely.
What’s your thought on the school scene mask?
Are you saying they sculpted smaller eyes for the school scene mask and the others?
In an interview, Malone stated that DP Jr borrowed his mask for H4. What happened to that?
What’s with the white hair?
Your theory doesn’t answer any of this Billy.
-School scene…easy, NO ONE knew what they were doing. They, the makers of the movie, knew a Kirk mask was used, so that is what they wanted. It was not until Akkad got on the set that it was changed.
-Yup, a recast was done and then they modified the sculpt.
-Don used the Malone mask for a court case in 1997/1998; it was not returned after that. Someone has their dates mixed up. (I helped Don with photos and other things for the court case. DPS should have won the case but the court did not look at the masks.)
-White hair…the masks were made up like KIrks then modified after they changed the mask to a Myers mask.
-They used a 1983 The Mask…they enlarged it, pressed it, modified it and made a mold from it.
So they did use something from H2 like the Gorezone article states and as the writer stated in the commentary. Yea I do agree they had no idea what was used on H1/2 other than it was a kirk.
So that explains that there was more than just a DP THE MASK recast in certain scenes.
I was told it was Bigcat’s 75 that was used in court.
Interview states that Bill lent his mask because it was neede for H4. I read that on the HMA years ago.
You’ve even mentioned it a couple times…
So you’re saying they recasted a DP84, went thru the hassle of making them all kirks and then after discovering the mask in H1/2 was white, they redid them?
With the time and budget they had, that’s really hard to believe.
They used several masks; they used my 86, my Rubies Kirk and an my 1990’s The Mask. (My old masks, masks I don’t even have anymore.) I have no clue about Pete’s mask and I know, for a fact, Malone’s Kirk was there.
I don’t remember saying Malone’s mask was used for H 4.
Ask Ken Horn. I asked Don. If you simply look at the hair line for the Halloween 4 mask, it’s almost identical to The Mask from DPS. They were rushing to get a mask done for the movie because DPS kept them waiting.
Why recast an 84? Why didn’t they just use that?lol
So the Malone interview is a fake?
So where did the survivng H2 masks in the article come from? Is this all folklore?? Was the writer in the commentary lying?? That’s what I’d(We) like to know.
The hairline doesn’t even explain anything.
I remember your “Ear” theory on how they match your '84. I still think a survivng mask from H2 was used in the process like the crew states. A quick recast with some custom finishing. Recasting can wash away certain details. Ear shapes can distort during the process. I checked my 99 and it does match rather nicely with the other pics.
