Listening to the H4 Q/A that’s being aired live right now. It’s posted on Danielle Harris’s FB page
The writer, Alan B. McElroy, as he did state in the H4 dvd commentary, clearly just stated again seconds ago that the mystery mask shown in the school scene was indeed a left over mask from H2. He also states there was no way they could reshoot that scene with the new mask due to it being a stunt scene. Other scenes were reshot with the primary Hero mask that came later.
The director stated in the 15 disc doc that it was just a mistake and someone had brought the wrong mask by accident.
Not true since this was the first day of shooting and this was the ONLY mask they had. The prop people had ordered the back up masks(that became the Hero) later on in the shoot.
Some people say its a Tramer but I think its just a quickly made up kirk by Don Post. Dick Warlock told me both of the two Tramers had been used in Ben’s death scene and there were some other back up masks(NOT Tramers) on set.
I was shocked they removed Alan B. McElroy’s commentary from the blu ray which is why I kept my DVD. Much more informative than the director.
He even states in the commentary(in the dvd) that he was there on the first day and was wondering why the mask had white hair(he states blonde at the Q/A).
This same mask can later be seen with Morga again during the Kelly Meeker death now converted to a Myers.
Notice the huge crease on the forehead.
Interesting. I’m curious as to why they didn’t have a mask already painted up when the filming started? You would think that would be one thing they should be prepared with.
So true.lol
While the director always states that he was “highly aware of Halloween” I doubt he really knew what the mask used was. The crew was probably given that kirk and was told “Hey it’s a mask left over from H2” and they went with it. Like when you look at the Don Post 85 the Mask that was released to the public at the time, it came with colored brows with side burns. Clearly shows that people who had no interest in Halloween really had no idea what the Shape looked like.
I’m assuming people like Alan who’s a real fan questioned why the mask looked the way it did on set and the crew started to take notice.
Very interesting indeed. I never knew that mask was used in the Kelly death scene as well. Just a thought, is it possible this mask was also used for the brief glimpse we get of it on the rack at the store? Because you notice the eyes are not cut yet.
The mask used in the School/Meeker scene was an actual Don Post Kirk 75.
The remaining 6 masks which were sent to the set from Don Post were mock up kirks and were not actual 75s. They were sent to the FX guy in kirk form but with white hair. He had to mist the hair, cover the fleshtones with white paint and then cut open the eyes. The mask you had posted was one of the 6 mock up kirks which were sent.
Wish we knew what the origins of what the 6 masks were. Some say it was an all new quick sculpt using the Shatner lifecast.
No one clearly states why they couldn’t use the first mask for the remaining of the shoot. I’ve heard other fx people mention the 75 was too small for Morga and Wilbur so they needed another mask that would fit them.
Yeah, it would be nice to know their origins. And it would make sense to use them instead if the first mask was too small. But I’m curious, why did they get 6 more masks? I could understand maybe 2 or 3, but 6?
I was at the Q&A last night and I remember the question being asked about the mask with blond hair. I’m not sure if Alan McElroy was talking about a left over mask from H2. He said they originally wanted to use the original mask from the first film but when it arrived the hair had been bleached. Here’s a link to the Q&A. The question is at 12:48.
It’s unclear to me what he meant exactly. Surely the original mask from the first film wasn’t used because there’d be no reason to dye its hair blond. Maybe he meant a left over Ben Tramer mask, but I’m guessing he meant a left over stunt mask from either the original or the second film. How many extra masks were there for the first film?
Also, how was the Ben Tramer mask made? Was it a somewhat modified Kirk mask?
Well most of these questions have been answered in my original post. Alan does state in the H4 DVD commentary that they had “A” mask from H2.
You do know the original H1/2 mask was a converted Don Post 75 kirk mask? The one seen in the school is just that, an unconverted kirk.
I assume Alan doesn’t know what a 75 kirk is.
The Tramer was made by Rob Tharp who worked for Don Post studios. He made two and Dick Warlock stated both were burned in the crash scene.
