I’ve read in some reviews that this is a new scan that was signed off on by JC & Dean Cundey… presumably timed to match the 35th’s colour temp. Doesn’t mean it’s true though…
The transfer is better than expected. The daytime scenes especially feel a bit dark in the midtones and color is muted. A bit of tweaking on your TV can bring fix some of these problems. But the nighttime scenes really shine. The overall detail and shadow detail are better than ever.
It’s a very fall feeling film for sure now…most of the colors are muted down… even the Pumpkin at the beginning. Lots of grain present in daytime scenes. Watched it on my OLED last night. I miss the original mono.
The blue is most definitely still there. If your setup is calibrated properly, this transfer makes the film look the best it ever has. The colors in some scenes are a tad bit more muted this time around as I’ve said previously but it perfectly fits the tone and overall look and feel of the film.
I like the 4k HDR transfer. you see him in the shadows so much sooner than the reg xfers (if you are watching HDR). I have pix of 4 xfers. The “4k” was the from the HDR to sdr conversion out of the oppo player. This is to show a general comparison but you can’t judge the HDR to the SDR.
just unzip the attached zip to see my testing. untitled folder.zip (1.75 MB)
Maybe it’s just me but the H_THX_DVD images look the best. The H_4K_HDR_SDR images look very dark and in the last picture(grab08.jpeg) Michael’s mask doesn’t show but it shows in the other pictures.
In grab05.jpeg the leaves on the trees look more like fall colors.
One way over the other or this or that…man I love watching all of them for different feels etc. I think it’s great to be able to watch our favorite movie any way we want. I mean damn I’m thinking about spending some coin on a vhs player just to watch my vhs tape. Remind of being a kid and you can barely make out anything on it but it’s ok. Clarity can offer revelvence to an old movie or the feel of being IN the scene. An old tape can offer distance from the film transferring the room your occupying into the past…I want them all:)
Totally agree, I’m getting my 4k from Amazon on Sunday. I still haven’t tried the 35th version though, I’ve only ever owned Halloween on a VHS and a blu ray. That VHS is so worn out lol, still pretty cool though.
I added to my post. Lol I’m watching my 35th right this minute…the clarity is unreal for 1978. It’s like being in the scenes compared to older version. It’s great!

yes thats the point of the HDR version—on a normal tv you won’t see michael but on a tv that has HDR you will see him–and to me you see the outline of him earlier than the other 3. I just can’t display that “effect”.
I think the fall trees they changed the color of the leaves on the upper right in the color correction which was not replicated in other future mastering versions.
This version is definitely more dreary and muted and I dig it! I’ve been trying (unsuccesfully) not to double, triple and with this movies case quadruple dip with these 4K UHD releases. But they look so damn good. I’ll still never not be amazed they can make a 40 year old film look this amazing.
