While binge-watching H1-H2 (2009) I paid special attention to Halloween 5. IMO the mask (and movie) get a horribly unfair rep. I personally love it and it’s a favorite of mine in the series. That being said, I am extremely disappointed at the lack of screen accurate masks available. Yes there are SU mold copies available through the right channels but to me they just don’t look right and I’ve almost never seen an H5 that does. Some have come very close like Mike’s SSN Master copy or his old KNB pull, but even then it doesn’t totally look like what we see on screen. Part of the reason, I think, is because of the way Don stretches the mask. When looking at screenshots it seems that he gives it a “castle stretch” of sorts. Because of all that, I’m gonna take a shot at sculpting my own down the road. The only thing is I am encountering a problem that I’d love everyone’s opinion on.
The problem (partially) is not being sure what to sculpt lol. When I watch H5 and look at the BTS pics I see a ton of different looks (shown below). I circled in red what I see in my mind when I think H5 Myers. I’d like to know, what does your mind’s eye see? Yes an accurate mask should take on all of the looks, but I’m wanting to capture at least the one that is seen and thought of the most. What do you think?
Yes, I agree. H5 is not a good movie, but for me, it’s watchable, a guilty pleasure of sorts, probably because I grew up watching it every Halloween ha ha. But when I think of the H5 mask, my mind instantly goes to the scenes that take place in the Myers house, specifically the scene where Dr Loomis is talking to Michael to give him the knife. I also think of the image you posted of the mask with the black background! In any case, I hope the best of luck to you in sculpting the mask, and I can’t wait to see it!
I love H5 and the mask, it’s a favorite of mine. Mikes KNB nailed the look for me, more so than the SSN copy, it looks a bit bloated to me. Still a grail mask though.
Thank you all for posting! I know it’s all angles and lighting, but sometimes there’s just that one look that sticks out, ya know?
Me too! It’s been a long time favorite. That and H4 have the best “Halloween” vibes, IMO. I think it’s hard for me to see an H5 mask as accurate unless it’s being stretched, which I have not seen. I don’t know if I’ve ever even seen an H5 costume shot!
Paper thin masks stretching on dons head is probably the biggest thing which also made a much bigger gap in the lips slit in most scenes as well…That combined with the lack of perfectly replicated eyecuts/hairjobs/hairlines/paintjobs is why you will never see a PERFECT H5…And one H5 will never be end all because you see how many diff looks there were with the screencaps posted
i think is pretty hard to have a perfect profil of michael myers mask espacialy the old movies they have no light and so many angle. for my part in myers house is a good look!!
I get what you’re saying. I suppose that might have something to do with the fact I’ve not seen ONE single H5 mask that has totally satisfied me as an H5 fan. Not one. Maybe there’s one out there but I haven’t seen it.
I watch all the halloweens, so I can’t hate any. But h5 is definitely not a rememberable or well-made entry in the series in my opinion, so much stuff was brought to the table that just doesn’t make sense, and wasn’t thought out, it was just, ''oh we haven’t really figured out all this, we’ll let the sequel handle it." pretty lazy, and was a very rushed movie in production. I can see if people just enjoy it for the entertainment value, but it’s not a good movie.
As far as the mask goes, it’s my second least favorite one in the series, first least favorite being h2 2009. It just looks goofy with the really far back hairline, big pointy lips and alien looking eye cuts. just not for me.
Thank you! And thank you for posting in here. It’s an honor to have you in the discussion given that you own and have owned the best H5 masks out there. I have noticed the mouth slit when Don wears the mask. I know that it isn’t true accuracy to sculpt a mask as it looks when being worn, but to me that’s screen accuracy. Sometimes (again, IMO) screen accuracy trumps true accuracy. This would be one of those cases, which is why I’m going to make mine that way .
YES, YES, YES. It blows me away that almost no H5s have had screen accurate eyecuts, paintjobs, or hairlines astounds me. It’s like no one even cares to since not many people enjoy the film. Agreed that there will never be a PERFECT H5 but I think with the right efforts we could get damn close! The difference from scene to scene in the mask amazes me.
Nope! Me either. The closest anything has ever gotten is Mike’s KNB pull, but that still didn’t really do it. Maybe about 80%. That last 20% of accuracy is the eyecuts and the stretch, for me anyways.
Halloween 5 will always be my favorite Halloween film. The fall/autumn feel is great and the weapon choices of Michael’s in the film are great. Don Shanks was a great Myers in the film. The mask is my favorite but as stated above, no one has seemed to capture the H5 look IMO. Some have come very close but still seem off. I owned a Ghastly Pro 5 which is supposed to be from a recast of the movie mold or something along those lines but it still seemed off to me. The mask was fantastic itself. Jame’s H5 is my favorite and is on my wish list at the moment.
Most H5 replicas are medium/thick pulls… My copies of the SSN REVENGE and my Ghastly H5 for example…
As we can see in the scenes where Michael watches Mike driving backwards to the liquor store or while he’s watching Tina it seems the mask is very thin. Even sunlight shines through at the neck flaps.
That could be a main reason why H5 replicas are not screen accurate enough…
An other thing is the nose appliance… I never noticed it while watching the film… So to me it’s not really a big thing… Just my opinion.
Completely agree! Most replicas make it really exaggerated but it’s not even noticeable unless you’re looking for it. I mean KNB can definitely blend a latex appliance onto a latex mask.
Like all the other Halloween masks, the original Knb masks from Halloween 5 are very unique in their own way. The hair, the paint work, the thin pull, and the overall look of the mask is just a beautiful sight to see. I personally love the film and mask for what they have to offer, i’m proud and more honoured to own a quite stunning unused original mask from this film which has the original nose. I like how the mask looks in every scene haha.
I think thickness is definitely one of the contributing factors of why we don’t have a very close H5 yet. That and the ears never seem to face frontward/the neck never flares out correctly. When I spoke to Don on the phone he told me that KNB glued makeup sponges to each side of the mask to make it flare out more because Akkad didn’t like how tight it was to Don’s neck. He (Don) said that he (Akkad) “wanted it to look more like a mask”. Thought that was a really interesting tidbit .
This is why I can’t tell them apart in the film! It’s next to impossible to see. There’s only one or two moments where I could make it out. I simply wasn’t sure if the lack of nose appliance contributed to the change of looks that we see in the film. Fortunately I think it’s just angles and lighting.
Woo! What an honor to have another owner of a KNB pull in here! I’ve only marveled at their beauty in photos, I couldn’t even imagine seeing one in person! Do you know how many unused were made and how many actually had a nose appliance? Was it just the hero and Stunt? Don’t get me wrong I love how the mask looks in every scene, I just have an image of what Michael’s mask in H5 looks like and those circled scenes are what pop into mind .
The nose appliance is seen throughout the entire film and in every screencap originally posted. They just did a much better job blending it in to the rest of the mask vs Halloween 5 replicas. All you have to do is look at the nose itself it is quiet different all around than the original sculpted nose.It is also easy to spot the difference in the lips
That’s something else that I’m glad you mentioned. It seems most replicas botch the extension lines. I mean in this photo it’s barely there and they’re super close.
