I’ll start by saying that I believe personally that overall, (and I think that a decent amount of Friday fans will actually agree, even if that series is there favorite.) that Halloween is a better series, as much as I love Friday the 13th. I love it for just how entertaining and fun it is to watch, especially in a group, with almost any movie in the series you can sit back and relax with some friends and laugh and make comments about all the stupid and funny parts, see some truly great kills, and just have a great time overall. I believe that that’s what Friday the 13th is the best at, cause sometimes you just need to see a fun and entertaining movie, as stupid as it might be. The Halloween series is fun to watch to a certain extent, but nowhere near Friday the 13th. Though I believe that the Halloween films are in general better than the Friday films, they’re smarter, scarier, and are made better. But enough of that, here are my answers:
H1 vs. Part III: John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978)
Don’t get me wrong, I love Friday the 13th Part III, it’s my second favorite out of the series, right behind Part I. But Halloween… How do I even start? It’s a film that comes closer to being perfect than almost any movie I’ve ever seen, everything about it is done right. The music is genuinely creepy and without it the film wouldn’t be what it is. The Characters are not shallow and they feel a lot like actual people. Even with the teenage victims like Bob, Annie, and Lynda, they have their own personalities and traits, they aren’t annoying, and they’re pretty well acted. Michael, Loomis, and Laurie are all just amazing characters and Castle, Pleasence, and especially Curtis do spectacular jobs bringing them to life. And it has something that you don’t see in hardly any slasher movie ever, it makes you at the least, genuinely creeped out, and that’s all thanks to Carpenter’s amazing talent at creating suspense. When you expect scares, they don’t happen, it’s only when you’ve been waiting long enough to become uncomfortable that they do, and they’re effective. I could never say enough about this movie, and I mean, you guys already know full well why this movie is so good.
H2 vs. Part IV: Halloween II (1981)
Again, I need to state how Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, is agreed on by most people to be one of the best films in the series. In a way, it kinda is the final chapter for how the series was for the first four movies, after this it would kinda evolve with a different tone. Personally the first half of the Friday the 13th series (If we’re going to divide it into two parts, 1-4 and 6-11, part V and the remake are kinda in their own spots.) is my favorite, and the Final Chapter is my third favorite in the series overall. But for this I’m going to have to go with H2. I know how some of you aren’t the biggest fans of the first sequel, and I can understand why, Halloween II is no Halloween, but I’d without a doubt call it one of the greatest horror sequels of all time. The fact that it takes place immediately after the first movie, on that very same fateful night, helps make a connection between the two films that’s stronger than almost any two films I know of, it really does feel like one massive movie, and that’s really cool to see. The fact that it feels so connected makes the story feel more like it’s meant to be there, and overall it isn’t that bad of a plot. Sure it sacrifices suspense and terror for violence and action, but I don’t think it weighs the film down too much. Overall, it’s my second favorite sequel, right after H40. Even if it isn’t canon in a timeline now, and I ended up liking H40 better, it will still always hold a place in my heart.
H3 vs. Part V: Halloween III: Season of The Witch (1982)
I think A New Beginning is pretty alright, it’s not one of my favorites though. But on the other hand I’m not the biggest fan of Halloween III. Yes, I try to view it as separate from the rest of the series, but I just don’t like it all that much. It’s a really cool idea of a movie, but I think that the execution is pretty bad, and the pacing is bad enough to bother me, plus it feels like it completely falls apart over the course of the ending. Though I have to appreciate it for it’s killer concept, some crazy kills and its bizarreness. It’s kind of a tough choice, but I think that I’m going with H3.
H4 vs. Part VI: Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
I love Halloween 4, and Jason Lives is pretty great too. Jason Lives is a truly fun movie, with a great Jason, Thom Mathews is really great as Tommy Jarvis, and those Alice Cooper songs are a pretty good addition too. But Halloween 4 is really good for a sequel, it’s really impressive for a sequel. The soundtrack is one of the best in the series, it does an excellent job at making the setting feel like October and the Midwest, the cast is really good, Danielle Harris does an amazing job for a child actress. I’ll point out one thing I don’t like about it too much, and that’s Michael. I don’t think that he’s the worst Michael in the series, I think his mask is the worst, though I’ve kinda developed a soft spot for it over time. I’m not a fan of how he doesn’t have much of a neck and how his chest and shoulders look like they’re padded. Though Geroge P. Wilbur does a pretty alright job as the shape.
H5 vs. Part VII: Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
Believe it or not, The New Blood used to be my favorite in the series, and even now it’s probably my 6th or 7th favorite out of them all. I really liked the characters in this one, even if for the most part they weren’t very different, and the whole ESP thing with the main character might be a little stupid but I actually like it a fair amount. Plus, this has probably my favorite Jason in the series, I love how he looks and Kain Hodder is amazing, and the fight scene where he gets the living crap beaten out of him is awesome to see. Halloween 5 on the other hand, I really really don’t like it. It’s my third least favorite in the series, behind RZH2 and Resurrection. Sometimes I feel kinda sorry for it, because it seems like it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as any other movie in the series, but I don’t know if it really deserves that attention either. With some parts of the movie, it feels like it’s trying to be intelligent and unique, while completely failing to do so, and other parts make the movie feel like a complete cash grab, which overall it probably was. Most of the characters in this movie are pretty bad, from the cops to the typical teenagers, and the fact that it doesn’t even seem to care about really anything at this point, killing off Rachael (that pissed me off so bady the first time I saw it.) not bothering to make the Myers House look anything like it did originally, and adding in plot points that they don’t even explain, along with a lame ending that doesn’t really do anything but make this painful story stretch on further. I’ll say this though, Harris and Pleasence still do excellent jobs, and are probably some of the only good things about this movie. Plus I think that Myers appearance might be a slight improvement from the last movie, even if he looks pretty goofy, and I think Don Shanks did a pretty good job actually. Plus, there are some kinda cool scenes, like the one with the laundry vent, that was actually a little bit scary to see.
Resurrection vs. Part VIII: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
I’m positive with which I think is better on this one. Resurrection is in my opinion the worst movie in the series, while Jason Takes Manhattan is probably one of the worst in the Friday series, I still think it’s alright, even if it’s title is a blatant lie. I’ll admit, Resurrection in a way is similar to the Friday the 13th series with how it’s kinda a fun movie to watch in a group, though just how stupid it is almost ruins that too. Jason Takes Manhattan is a better movie, that’s for sure.
H6 vs. Part IX: Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
With both Halloween 6 and Jason Goes to Hell, I think that they’re both just okay. I like Jason Goes to Hell better than a lot of people, but not by much, and with H6 I don’t hate it with a burning passion like some people but I don’t think it’s one of the best in the series like some other people. As for the changing of mythology, I think Halloween 6 did a better job, especially when it had some stuff left over to explain and expand upon, though overall it’s just not that great. I’ll admit, Jason Goes to Hell with the whole ghost Jason thing and the dagger and the worm is a little fun to watch, but pretty stupid overall.
