Honest opinions on Sinister Studios?

So, I’m wanting my first indie Myers mask. I already have a Halloween 6 replica from Trick Or Treat Studios, but I want one from an independent artist. Wanting an H1. Really been eyeballing The Obsession from Sinister Studios lately because of the price and the wait time and really considering pulling the trigger on one very, very soon. Plus, his masks all look really great to me, judging by site pics and YouTube vids I have seen. Anyone on here have anything from Sinister Studios and have opinions on the company?

Go for the Hiro mask, i’s more screen accurate, the obsession is goofy looking

I love hiro mask great price and I think wait time only month

I will recommend SINISTER STUDIOS. My HIRO is a great looking mask. Thick pull, great hair, good sculpt and the price and lead time is the best in the biz.

You can find a thread here where James has shown the potential of the Hiro. They have a solid price point and it really is up to you. I find other sculpts to be more accurate but at nearly twice the price. The Hiro is a great sculpt for the price if you are looking for an indy mask

My brother and I picked up a Sinister Studios 75C and were disappointed with it. It didn’t look anywhere near as good as the pictures on their site. The paint, weathering, and the hair left a lot to be desired.

We wound up selling it not too long after receiving it. My suggestion would be to check out some other artists before you make your final decision. A little extra wait time or money might be worth it.

Here are some comparisons with the site’s pictures and what we got. The lighting is different, but I feel that it is a fair comparison.

Sinister Studio has the most consistent and quickest shipping times of all the indie mask makers I’ve dealt with so far. When you factor in the price, they really offer you the best option for an affordable, but legit H1 mask. Because I was still in that “I can’t spend hundreds of dollars on a mask mindset”, I initially bought The Obsession. It’s a really good Myers mask and in my opinion wears better than it displays.

That being said, despite the $25 price difference, The Hiro and The Obsession are really in the same price category. Unless you just have an affinity for The Obsession, I implore you to go for The Hiro. It is a better H1 than The Obsession and truthfully, if you buy The Hiro first, you won’t feel the need to buy The Obsession because you will already have the better of the two. I actually posted a crude video on Youtube where I did a side by side of the two masks. Another advantage of the Hiro, it comes in 23 and 24" on request. Whatever you decide, I would say look for the best pics/vid of a Hiro/Obsession you see online and send Cris Patterson(owner) a screenshot so he can do his best to replicate it.

Truthfully, I stayed away from the 75c because some of the ones I’ve seen online looked inconsistent. I actually think yours looked pretty good(although, like you stated, not like the site pics). If the person you sold it to mussed up the hair and got it looking a little ratty, I would think it would look even better. As is always the case with this hobby though, if you don’t like it, than that’s the opinion that counts.

The hair was really weird. It was plastered down to the mask and very hard. I’m not sure what he used to style it. Maybe a ton of hairspray. Handiboy uses hairspray to style his masks that I have, but the feel of the hair was completely different.

I had the feeling that if I combed it, chunks would start to come out. That probably wouldn’t have happened, but I didn’t want to risk it when I was contemplating selling it.

I hear you. If you’re like me, you probably don’t want to have to style the hair after paying over $150 for the mask. But for other people who have the knack for it, per request, Sinister will just ship the mask minus hair product(i.e. hair spray)so they can really get the hair looking the way the want. I am going to make this request on a new Hiro I am going to be sending out for a rehaul. Ideally, I would love to save the money and just have The Hiro I already own reworked, but I absolutely love the way my Hiro came out and if the rehaul came back anything less than perfect, I would be mad at myself.

My honest opinion? They all look pretty goofy to me, the new TOTS H1 looks way better and it’s far more accurate, if you’re really after an indie mask for collection I suggest you save up and get a solid one.

I would argue the opposite. Sinister Studios two masks looks way, way better than TOTS.

Whatever suits your boat mate, I’d agree if you were talking about Tots H2s, but the new TOTS 78 is a solid sculpt with a lot of potential for rehauling, and doesn’t look goofy imo

The hair is the bad thing on sinister studios masks. I contemplated getting one then held out and for an extra 75 to 80 bucks got a H1SM

The original poster is asking for honest opinions and it’s certainly good to get all of them. I really like the two masks I’ve gotten from Sinister but there are a some people who just don’t like them at all. I think kevinmask78’s advice about saving up isn’t bad. If you are thinking Creep or Nag you are going to be spending over 300-400 dollars so every penny is going to count.

I do have to offer another opinion on the TOTS 78 and Hiro however. As kevinmask78 points out, it really comes down to personal taste(whatever suits your boat I believe). As someone who owns both, I find The Hiro to be a much better mask. To be fair, it’s about $90 more, but unless you are having the 78 rehauled(which will cost you an additional $100-200), The Hiro is still a much better H1. Again, personal opinion, but seeing them side by side The Hiro takes it.

Thanks for the opinions, guys! Much appreciated! Indie replica masks can go for hundreds of dollars, but I can’t shell out $300 - $400 right now for one. For the prices he offers that it would be a good entry to an indie artist mask. I’ve checked out Sinister Studios for the past year and I really like what they do and plus he offers very great prices for an indie and the turnaround time is quick. Someone mentioned the TOTS H1. I have nothing against TOTS and think they make good stuff and I own an H6 mask and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 mask from them, but I want an indie mask. The TOTS one does look good, but judging by pics on the site and online, I think the Sinister Studios ones look better. I’ve seen pics of both the Obsession and Hiro online from people and the site and they both look really great to me. I would be happy with either one. But, if anyone has both, I would like to see side by side comparisons of the Obsession and Hiro.

I like my Obsession, personally. It’s a solid mask and worth the price I think.

Get the Hiro mask!

My brother posted the pics above, which was the mask I got. I was super excited for this thing to show up, especially after how good I thought it looked in the pics. In all honesty, it showed up and I was pissed. First I noticed the hair that was cemented down to the head, and then the eye cuts. They are some of the worst I’ve ever seen at the price I paid, IMO. And then the overall integrity, just felt really cheaply made. I KNOW that this mask is much cheaper than a lot of others, but I also feel that the pics posted of this mask are very misleading. If I saw the pics that were posted above, I never would have bought it.

Long story short, I took it out of the box and put it back in no more than 10 min later. It sat for about six months, and then I sold it. And I’ll be completely transparent, I was a bit bitter over the whole thing because I really do not feel that I got what was advertised.

I like my sinister studious obsession. I Have mine displayed with my tots 78. I’d have to find the worn pics I have but I would say I need to get some Velcro to tighten the neck better and I think the mask will look a lot better worn. It fits me good but it’s a thick pull and the neck seems to be wide when worn on me so will be getting Velcro for that mask and the tots 78 if I decide to ever wear them again for some pictures or to take out around Halloween.
