Honest opinions on Sinister Studios?

I was exactly in the same spot less than one year ago, many of you surely remember, I was looking for a cheap H1 for cosplaying that I could get within Halloween and it was already september, so pretty late for gettnig an indie mask, and I didn’t really feel like wasting 400 bucks for a mask (and none of the big names would get me a mask in a month), guys here all pointed out the SS Hiro, I mailed Chris and promised me a copy in less than 2 weeks if I’d payed the rush fee, I was about to pull the trigger on it but the more I looked at the pictures the more it looked funny to me, and considering that I’m not in the US 150 dollars + rush fee + shipping overocean + duty fees at the delivery in total I’d have payed over 300 bucks, so a little less than the price for a NAG for basically a cheap, goofy not accurate mask, that was the moment that I decided to pass for last Halloween and save up for a high end mask for the next one (the incoming one). In my opinion 150 bucks for a mask is already too much, especially if you don’t like it, better off speding double or a little more for a solid mask you already know you’ll never get tired of, the more you spend the more you save IMO, cause you won’t have to bother selling it and buy more masks if you just need one, that’s me.

Well said my friend . What mask did u end up buying?

NAG Shape78 you see in my avatar, might buy some more in a future, but being a cosplayer and not a collector I’m fine with the one I have for now.

Thanks! I ended up going with the Obsession. I looked online at the site and vids and other pics of it online and I just really liked the way it looks. Plus, I can’t shell out $300 for one right now. I have been looking at Sinister Studios for the past year and been highly considering one. The prices are great for a screen accurate indie artist mask and thought it would be a good starting point for my first indie Myers mask. I was obviously impressed with what I saw for the prices, too, so yeah, haha. His work looks spot on to me. Pretty excited for it to get here! Will for sure post pics when it arrives!

I just did this real quick for fun. I am a terrible picture taker and really didn’t take any time or care into taking theses pics. Keep in mind that I spent the exact amount of time on “styling” the hair on these two masks(5 minutes) and they are side by side under the same lighting, with the same amount of stuffing. The only difference is I have a stand for The Hiro and the 78 TOS is supported by a water bottle

Full disclosure, The Hiro is a $150 mask, where as the TOTS '78 is a $60 mask. So with a $90 advantage,The Hiro should be the better looking Myers mask. As I said, the '78 is great looking mass produced mask, and with an overhaul, could surpass the Hiro. However, as they stand at present, The Hiro is the superior mask(IMHO).

Personally I like the TOTS78 here way better, the sculpt and features are way far more screen accurate than the Hiro, even stock.

I gotta go with 78 tots it looks more accurate also with rehaul it’s way better mask

Cemetary Gates makes a damn good H1 called “Fear”. Probably around 250 if I remember correctly.

the fear is garbage

As someone who owns and likes both masks, I understand the pros and cons of both. But objectively, the weathering/color of The Hiro is far more legit(unless you’re one of the many that prefer a clean mask) and the quality of the latex is better. Also, the hairline on the '78 has that hairnet appearance that just looks crappy. On a personal note, I think the eyes on the '78 are too big.
Now, a lot of these things can be addressed through a rehaul(I will certainly post mine when it is done), but as is, I could never say the TOTS is better. As far as screen accuracy goes(a knock I hear a lot about The Hiro), this hobby has taught me that lighting and angles are the biggest factor in determining how good a mask can look. I have seen pics of these masks online where they look amazing, and some where they look crappy. I’ve even seen NAGS look awful in some pics and I don’t think anyone would tell you they are awful masks.
I know this line sounds overused but it almost always comes down to personal preference. If you really like a mask, than it will be hard for someone to deter you, just as when you have decided that one is crap, the chances that you will ever like it are highly unlikely.

Well said friend but I have seen some nag mask look pretty average but ur right its personal preference at end of the day

How so? care to elaborate more.

I own the Hiro and the Obsession, and I love both of them

The Fear is an INCREDIBLE mask. The stock paint job is also incredible.

For one, like the Warlock, it’s a horrible recast, however with the fear, it’s essentially really distorted, compared to something that naturally looks stretched in it’s sculpt, like the Creep, or the Second Stab

not a fan of the Fear either, I actually think it looks uglier than the Hiro.

But seriosuly, I may understand collection, different tastes and small cults, but honeslty for a newbie looking for a cheap and screen accurate mask there are better options nowdays, to me there’s really no point spending 150 bucks (which is already a lot for a mask) for a mask which is everything but accurate and lacking of that badass glance that we all know from Michael, TOTS 78 might have crappy hair, I agree, but with some styling it can get decent, the Hiro really has funny features and it always looks like it’s about to cry to my vision, and this thing is there in each Sinister mask I’ve seen, TOTS 78 is more accurate than some people think, sculpt is well made, eyes are big but their shape is right, and you don’t need heavy weathering for an H1, clean looks fine, another option is the new Boogieman, for 60 bucks they are really a no brainer, and who cares if the latex lasts less, it’s a cheap mass production mask that you can always rebuy and get it the day after. If you really feel like spending more than a hunderd for a mask I’ll always suggest to save more and get a high end mask.

I just want to preface my post by saying that the problem with posts and texts is that you never know the tone of the person’s words because you can’t hear them. I’m saying this to let you know that I don’t have a problem or am upset in any way with what you have been saying and I hope you feel the same way. But when you say things like the “78 is more accurate than people think” or “who cares if the latex lasts” you’re saying that you think the 78 is more accurate and that you don’t care about the quality of the latex. I think there are a lot of people that would agree with you on those points but others(like myself) just don’t see it that way.

Also, you made a decision to buy a high end mask(and based on your avatar pic it looks like a good one) for a lot of money buy you’re marveling why someone would pay $150(or only $125 for The Obsession) for an indie mask of their own because their not screen accurate. That term is very subjective, especially when looking at your avatar pic which looks amazing, but you would be hard pressed to show me a scene in the movie where that pic looks screen accurate. Trust me, I know you have, and will likely share images of you wearing it at different angles or in black and white but that just proves my point that every H1 has it moments where it looks screen accurate.

Again, I don’t want these printed words to come off as harsh or snarky. If we were talking in person, you would hear I’m just having a spirited debate with you. I just wanted to impress on you that there are reasons that people don’t mind spending a little more for a less prestigious mask and are just as happy with their purchase as you are with yours.

Completely cool here, and I just described what my eyes see here, but I’d like to highlight some points

  1. most people here look for accuracy, some others don’t care too much, many people just buy a mask because they want it in their collection, so no matter if a mask ain’t accurate enough or if it’s only 150.

  2. I never said that my mask is 100% screen accurate, (and the picture of my avatar was not taken to mimick any scene of the movie, that was just a selfie to see if everything looked alright) actually I think that none of the high end masks are either, cause none of them is the original and are still all replicas, and the way you stuff it, your head shape, size, all these details play a major role for improving accuracy, but if you’re saying that any mask with details that are completely off can look accurate under certain circumstances is like saying that a broken clock will tell you the right time at least once a day, you really can’t make a comparison between a SS mask and a NAG, although a NAG may not be 100% screen accurate it still retains the most known Myers features and that cool badass looking, night, day, low or high lighting, and sorry if I say again, The Hiro to me looks like a Pierrot Myers mask, it has a sad expression, Michael requires an inexpressive badass glance under all circumstances to look right, you don’t want a sad Michael, or at least I don’t, again for 60 bucks I can get a TOTS78 or a Boogieman that surely remind me of the movie more than SS masks.

And I’m saying this cause I was about to buy a Hiro, but the more I looked at the pictures the more it really looked like a sort of rehauled TOTS H2 to some extent, so I soon wondered why I should spend 150 bucks for a mask that doesn’t scream 78 Hero at all? with the shipping I’d have spent even more than 150, total would’ve been around 300 anyway if you consider shipping + taxes, almost the price of a shipped NAG, basically if you have 150 bucks to blow I think you can blow 370 as well, but for a much better mask that you won’t get tired of, that’s me, and surely I’m not ritch, I was also after a cheap mask initially, but eventually I leaerned that the more you spend the more you save, on the cheap side there was really nothing worth it even for a poor newbie like me. SAid that many people might have all the reasons to buy a SS mask, mine are words of a cosplayer, I’m not a collector, to me showing up at Cons with a kickass mask that really makes the difference is very important, but still as a cosplayer with that in mind, if I had a tight budget or needed some spares I’d definitely get a TOTS78 or a Boogieman for H1.

Interesting I will keep that in mind when I’m shopping around for a good Indie H1.
