I’m looking to purchase my first Myers mask and simply put, I am overwhelmed by all of the choices available.
My collection is based around pieces that are as authentic to the original 1978 film as possible. I have era and screen accurate Tex-Tradewears, I own the boots, and I own a knife that is extraordinarily similar to the 102-12" (in fact, it was made by a sister company of Case and was likely (I assume) the knife Case modeled their 102-12 after). The knife I have will have to do until I can procure a Case.
That leaves the mask. And man, that’s a tough decision to make.
The gist of it is this: I cannot obtain the Hero, obviously, and I cannot afford a real 1975 Kirk (my ideal mask after the hero)… the next closest thing to an authentic 1975 Kirk is??? I have no idea.
Is there a replica of a vintage Kirk out there for sale? Something that has a direct lineage to an original Kirk? I should be clear, I am looking for both a replica Kirk and a rehauled replica Kirk. I’d like both for my collection.
Right now I really really like the 10/31 mask made by Spookhouse as it was apparently pulled from an early variant of the original Kirk, BUT I’m not sure what else is out there that might have a stronger connection to the original Kirk.
to my knowledge the most accurate kirk replica masks in this hobby are: the masks that variant from the billy kirkus mold, originally produced by justin mabry of nightowl pro. id say the creep or the shat is the most well refined sculpt to replicate a vintage kirk mask. theres bryan hoffman from mcs, and he used a dp 75 kirk mask from the medleys- creating the hmk mask. in my opinion its the best kirk accurate mask in regards to size, detail and feature accuracy. theres also several retools from that like the h1sm, h2sm etc. and then theres masks from the company NAG, the 75k, 98 proto and all the variety of retools that come from that all originate from a don post 98 proto master mold, which apparently just is the master mold don post produced 75 kirks with?. something like that. to me personally, most nag masks from this variant dont look quite as accurate, some look a lot better than others, ive just always felt the masks head looks enlarged and like its bloated around the head and neck area as well as the bridge of the nose and nostrils looking too wide and soft. i believe the real 75 dp kirks were quite snug masks but very flexible and thin latex allowing for it to fit over the adult actors that played him in the original 2 films, when worn the original kirk fits different head shapes in a unique way and taking on a distinctly different look. the nag nightmare on the other hand i think makes for a extremely kirk accurate mask, as it comes from mabrys original cast off the billy kirkus dp 75. theres a lot more masks out there, like the db2 is another great one but quite a rare and exclusive find nowadays. but thats generally my knowledge on what i think are the best kirk replicas out there.
Certainly, my pleasure. I wouldn’t say it’s too convoluted, then again I’ve been discussing and learning about independent Michael myers mask replicas for nearly 6 years so it’s all apart of just learning the history as you go, I remember being like, nag 75k what the hell is that ? And what makes it different from this one and this one and this one and this one… you get the point.
I really wish the hobby was more what it used to be when I first was looking around here. It feels like the secondary market and members selling and trading really cool masks and not terribly overpriced was more common than it feels nowadays. The first high quality myers mask I purchased was the nightmare man 78 returns from nightowl. I look back on it as easily one of the most accurate masks in this hobby to date. Someone about that copy I owned felt very vintage and hero like. But my point is you would be hard pressed seeing old school myers masks popping up in the community for sale nowadays at a good price. I wish you the best of luck!
The Night Owl Creep is a mask that still holds up today with the most accurate features, and if you wear it right, it can be very accurate, especially unworn, if you do however struggle with a Castle Stretch, the I.D mask is the most accurate Castle stretch mask to date, and one to get!
This is my opinion as well. Not even necessarily just the 98 Proto, but masks that descend from the Proto too as it has the most accurate and untouched features.
I always thought the Nightowl Creep/Shat is one of the best 1975 Kirk sculpts! Ever since I joined the hobby, it still remains in my top 3 favorite sculpts till this day!
But honestly, there’s so many options you can choose from!
Don Post studios was set to re-release the kirk mask in 1998. There was a prototype mask made (maybe a couple of them) which was a direct pull from a foam master of the 75 kirk. For some reason they decided not to use this as the actual release of the 98 kirk, but instead heavily retooled it into a mess. They made a new mold for the 99 kirk which is much better, but still fairly heavily retooled. In a sense, the 98 kirk proto is a 75 kirk, just one generation off.
The 98 proto masks we are talking about are masks which come from a mold made from one of the rare unreleased prototypes. They are made by NAG.
Hey again, everyone. Thanks so much for the information.
If I have this right, the '98 Proto from NAG is a replica of a replica… making it twice removed from the '75 Kirk. Which I can live with if I have to. However, do any of you know if there is a mask around that is only once removed from the '75 Kirk? Are there any masks available you could recommend that are replicas made from an original Kirk?
The flow charts Ghostly linked are extremely helpful! And I think I’ve landed on a mask, but I would like the community’s opinion on the matter.
Does anyone know if the MCS HMK is still in circulation? After reading those charts, I think that is the only mask that has a single deviation from the '75 Kirk. I read a thread just now in regard to the creator sort of ghosting everyone and “retiring”. Is that about right?
