Michael's Mask... Blacked out or Visible eyes??

Hi All…
Been watching my Anchor Bay boxset again this week and just wondered what you preference is with regards to Michael’s eyes…

Do you prefer the mystery of the black cold emotionless eye holes or do you like to see Michael’s evil gaze?

I personally love the blacked out version of this icon, He’s empty and emotionless look just adds to the tension and threat.
That look was the catalyst for many a nightmare when I was younger and still remains up there at No1 today as my ultimate bogeyman… :axe:

But I do have to admit (which maybe slightly out-there with some of you) that I do like the H20 Michael, the fact that you can see the rage in his visibly tense eyes as he stikes his victims is extemely well done… His eyes also convey his extreme dislike to being knee’d in the Myers crown jewels by Laurie in the kitchen…and also the reflection of Charlie within his eyes as he scouts for that dreaded corkscrew, works very well for me. I think its also a well cast actor that can convey those emotions across to the audience with just his eyes and head movements from behind such an iconic mask… :smiling_imp:

Bottom of the list for me is RZ’s half mask in H2… It just doesn’t work for me at all… Michaels face should only every be a glimpse (like the gimpse in the original). RZ takes away all mystery completely and presents the fans of such an Iconic character with just a giant hobo… NOT COOL NO COOL AT ALL!!! :unamused:

Whats your take on this?? Id’ love to know what you all prefer…

For me it depends on the mask.

I like to have some of my Myers masks with black eyes (such as the H5 and H6 masks) and some with some cotton pushed back into the mask (such as the H1 and H2 masks) to accentuate the shape of the eyecuts.

These two methods work well if used on the proper mask. In Halloween for example you can just see “something” staring from behind the mask so for my display purposes the pushed back cotton formula works. Then other movies like Halloween 6, you mostly get a very dark “hollow” look from behind the mask during the movie so in this case I prefer the blackened eyes.

As far as the “half-mask” look (or even worse NO MASK) I agree with you, I HATE that crap RZ brought into the series. That’s not to say that I don’t like anything about RZs entries. The hobo look, damaged mask and all of that is great and cool but NOT when Michael’s face is exposed in any way.

Oddly enough I would love to own a good half mask for my collection because I actually like the way it looks UNWORN.

I prefer blacked out it just adds to the creepiness of him

Dr sam loomis “the blackest eyes, the devils eyes” Nuff said!

Never been a fan of the eye inserts people put in their masks, no matter how good the mask is…
pyscho, h78, creep, DB,s, Khdw,s ect ect

Eyes black for me! how it should be… imho

Thats for H1/H2…(even tho you see mr warlocks eyes in H2) after that. not fussed really

**I think it works well either way, depending on the mask.As far as my display masks,I just try to make sure if I stuff them with white bags,I use black for the eyes. With that said,I have eye inserts in my 05 Psycho and I think it looks great. Some masks pull off the eyes and it actually accentuates the look.

As far as in a film,I think it could work either way, just the same.I personally prefer not seeing Michael’s eyes on screen. When you can’t see the eyes, there is no expression and truly adds to the terrifying look.**

Goes either way for me. It all depends on the lighting, of course!

I prefer the totally black eye look myself. Seeing “human” eyes looking out from the mask detracts from the inhumanity the mask projects.

You can see his eyes in most of the films, but obviously the “iconic” look is without his eyes visible. It all comes down to personal preference. I personally like it when his eyes are covered by the lighting (H1/H2/portions of Zombie’s films) and not by mesh. It’s a lot more natural that way and a lot creepier.

I feel it’s WAY creepier NOT seeing the eyes! All of my hockey masks have mesh in the eyes and it is A LOT SCARIER to ME that way… Not knowing who is wearing the mask is just SICK!! Showing eyes is just not scary to me when it comes to Myers & JASON!

Got to say I think the empty black sockets convey a much creepier, supernatural force, whilst showing the eyes as in say H20 sort of demyths and humanizes the “beast”.
But…saying that… some eye shots (not many) can add a certain demented and animalistic look to myers and this shot here, I feel is a good example of that.

i like the eyes for the h1/h2 masks… they have to be positioned right though. alot of the screen caps, you can see the eyes but they are set back a little to keep in mind from the forehead/ eyebrow part of the face… that and they are close to, if not right at the top or a touch higher of the eye cuts. it looks better to me if they are set in the mask that way. i dont like them if they are pushed up tight against the mask because like i said about the forehead, they should be a bit back which then makes it realistic and creeeeeeepy!! …benny

Exactly! IMO, this shot displays relentless pursuit because of the eye showing!

blacked out looks the best

Thank you all guys for your valued input… Id been wondering what you all thought for a while now…
Shapeinthevoid… Many thanks for the truly awesome picture with eyes exposed… This kind of image is exactly how it can work with the right mask and situation… H20 does a few similar scenes with the evil look of a clearly deranged Michael…

Also agree with other comments regarding the mask being set forward slightly to give the inside face depth, leaving the actors eyes set back slightly, seeing that dark glint of the eye now and again adds real fear and tension, so much better than the usual dark netting that alot of masks seem to rely on nowadays…

Still not convinced that RZ’s half mask really works, but do agree RZ’s incarnation had some high points and does still deserve its place.

Thank you all… Nice one!!
Scott :drinkers:

i prefer using the same methods and techniques they used for the movie… i like accuracy (no this is my version of myers/jason etc) i like it exactly like the movie as possible

i love them all but…BLACK THEM OUT!! BLACK THEM ALL OUT!! i want to concentrate on the mask i display, not the eyes or face under it. most look cross eyed to me. unless there is a living person under neither, i say BLACK EM OUT.

Thank you hacknslash & evilsmellyclown for your input… I think the general consensus is… eyes blacked out…
Yes I definately agree that the exposed eyes do come across slightly boss-eyed in scenes, though I think getting knee’d in the b*****ks by Laurie in H20 would have that effect…

Nice one…
Thanks guys
