Original 1983 H3:SotW "Smiling Jack" Mask SCORE!!!

So today I went with my roommate to a store in San Antonio called “Starline Costumes,” a two-story family-owned business. Downstairs they had all of the mass-produced stuff and upstairs they have handmade costumes that they rent out. I just happened to look up at the shelf upstairs where a bunch of masks were and I caught a glimpse of orange. When I asked her to bring down the mask I instantly realized what it was and looked on the back and… well, see for yourself! I thought there was no way the owner would sell it to me because if she’s held onto it that long then surely she’d know its value but she sold it to me for 25 bucks! Then there was a sad moment involving a Funworld Ghostface mask which I will explain after the pics.

And the god-knows-how-old Day-Glo paint STILL WORKS!!!

What do you guys think its real worth is?

And the Ghostface story:

SO seeing as they had custom made outfits for rent I asked if they had any Ghostface robes. They brought back a mass-produced robe with a mask in a bag, a costume meant for renting. I look at the mask, didn’t think much of it and then I turned it over to see “FUNWORLD DIV” on the chin, a stamped middle finger right in my face. The owner wouldn’t sell me the mask because it’s for RENT ONLY. SO I’M considering renting the costume and switching out one of my cheap Ghostface masks for it. Here’s the elusive sonofabitch.

Thats the 1993 version but its an original and wow what a trip.

lol I was unaware of a 93 version. But those were made with Day-Glo paint as well?

Very nice Score
Don’t switch out the Ghostface mask dude…bad taste :frowning:
Nick

Sigh… I wanna save it cuz it’s being rented out to people who abuse it and kept in a hot hot storage room. But alas, I shan’t. Bad ju-ju…

Nice fine
Its not a “pumpkinhead”
It’s called “Smiling jack”
They are alot smaller than the pumpkin head.
I’d say $25 was a good price for it.
Congrats on that one…
BTW I dont recall that they glowed in the dark, I wonder if someone sprayed glow paint on it?

Love the Smilin’ Jack man, I think it says 1989 though.

Thanks! Correction made.

It doesn’t glow in the dark, it glows under black-light. I didn’t know that it did that till I looked up H3:SotW on Wikipedia and it said that the masks were produced with Day-Glo paint.

It says
“TM
A DON POST MASK
(c) 1983 DON POST STUDIOS INC.”

The 3 looks like a backwards “C” with a line through the middle.

No.

Cool mask! It is a Don Post Smilin’ Jack. These weren’t sold in the 90s, only in the 80s.

The Smilin’ Jack is a completely different sculpture than the H3 “Pumpkinhead”, but people do confuse it for the H3 mask (which was Don Post Studios plan - It looks like Pumpkinhead, but since it’s a new sculpture, they didn’t have to pay for liscensing). It’s a cool, pretty rare pumpkin mask by Don post, but really has nothing to do with H3 and when you compare the two side by side, they are different.

Oh… Odd. Cuz it has a lot of features that are almost exactly like the H3 masks. Weird…

What’s it worth exactly?

The H3 Pumpkin was mad for Halloween. Then it got into stores.

Hey, that’s a sweet score. Just because it’s a Smilin’ Jack and not a PH doesn’t mean its any less cool. Even the first SSN “Lil Buddy” H3 mask was a recasted Smilin’ Jack that they had to add some clay to the stem as it was too short compared to the movies mask. Once Clark figured out there were actually two different Pumpkins from DPS and he had recasted the wrong one, he made a deal with Tim Dunne to recast his screen used Pumpkin Head mask.

Here is a side by side of the two masks:

So it’s a design that inspired the H3 design?

No. It came AFTER the H3 Pumpkin Head mask. They couldn’t sell the PH because it was licensed by Dino de Laurentiis and the license ran out so they resculpted a similar design and renamed it Smilin’ Jack.

So where does that put it in value?

Hmmm… strange… they didn’t have the license, so they sculpted something that looks very similar and changed the name? And that’s legal? my my my my my my my oh my… That’s a great score though. After all these years still on a store shelf…

“Do as I say, not as I do!”

It wouldn’t be a surprise, they did it when they released a Shatner in 1999 after only securing rights for the prior year so they pre-dated the 99s with a 1998 date. They also released Frankenstein style hands with out a license in the 80s and stamped the hands “NO NA-ME” instead of the regular DPS stamp to avoid an issue there. They also released a Charles Laughton Quasimodo design with out a license in the 80s and pulled it after only a year. They sold the DPS “The Mask” for yeeeeeeears until only recently paying for licensing rights to a ‘Myers’ mask.

Very nice score, Mr. Riddle! :drinkers:

Very cool find. No matter what it’s worth, I would have scooped it up too. :drinkers:
