I mean it is for sure linked to the 75 kirk, but it appears to be bloated. I assume is was a first generation recast that was made for a digital scan / enlargement, like Precarious said.
Also, I’m glad you chimed in on the thread! I don’t think it was a latex foam filled, mainly due to the pic we have of the inside (attached). Also attached is a photo comparing that foam master to a 75K derived from a 98 Proto, and a 1984 the mask. In my next post I’m going to attach every picture of the 75s I have.
I made that comparison picture you just posted years ago. The “foam master” was used to create the 1984 The Mask and the 98 Kirk. The comparison was showing they originated from that “foam master.” I know for a fact its a latex pull that is foam filled. Don Post employees, Dennis Beckstrom and veteran collectors concurred it is a blank pull cast from an old mold that was foam filled. It’s not really bloated, but misshapen due to being old and improperly stored for so long.
Oh, cool! I didn’t know where I saved it from. I don’t see how it’s foam filled latex though, in the photo showing the inside it looks like straight foam, I don’t see any transition to another material (latex). I’m not saying exactly I don’t believe you, just that its confusing lol. and the mis-storage would definitely account for the shape.
Here are most of my 75K pics. I’ve excluded some private ones and some of the ones that have already been posted.
TheGhostlyShape, masters are often cast very thin and foam filled directly in the mold.
Best case scenario, it’s an original 1975 mold casting. Worst case scenario, it’s a recast of an original casting. Either way, it’s absolutely special. I do wish the current owner would offer scanned replicas rather than molded. If I remember correctly, their replica lacked form, detail, and size. This may be the best representation of the original mask survived.
I’m not sure if this is true, but a member stated “The Tharps have it now, modified it, looks much better.” the last time this mask was discussed. These replicas were posted, though I suppose it’s more likely they were sent blanks?
I stand corrected. Todd & Shannon Lutz, who operate Halloween-Mask.com, own that particular foam filled mask, along with various other Don Post artifacts bought at auction during the liquidation of the company.
