It been rumoured for sometime now that Lionsgate are producing a special edition of Halloween II on DVD. Lots of the fans are screaming for this to happen sooner rather than later as even Rosenthal had stated in Fangoria a while back that his cut of the movie would be on the disc…
However I think before we all scream for Rosenthals cut we should read and consider this…
At the last Halloween II Q+A at 30 Years of Terror, fans questioned the cast and crew about the Rosenthal cut. According to them his cut of Halloween II played more like a Psychological thriller with minimum kills, most of them occuring off-screen and was nothing like the TV cut and bears little resemblance to the theatrical cut.
According to Rosenthal in other interviews he has said that Carpenter only came in at the insistence of Akkad, to shoot extra scenes of violence in order to compete with the gorey slasher template that had been then set by “Friday the 13th” and that Carpenter also reshot the finale somewhat.
However Carpenter has said in interviews that during pre-production he asked Rosenthal to do only one thing… To make the movie scary because that’s what the audience expects.
Carpenter then left him to it but when Rosenthal screened his cut Carpenter said it wasn’t scary… he described it as “Pedestrian and predictable”…
Carpenter advised Rosenthal on how to improve it… pointed out problem areas… asked him to recut it… to pace it faster and increase the scare factor… According to Carpenter he even supplied Rosenthal with an excellent editor (Mark Goldblatt) but nothing changed and because Carpenter was the Producer of the movie he had a responsibility to the people who put the money up for it.
Not only that but Universal had refused to distribute the movie based on Rosenthals cut. Carpenter went into the editing room and spent 2 weeks cutting the movie shorter so it would move faster.
He then realised that it needed an opening scare (Alice on the phone) a few connecting sequences for the final chase scenes and some more killings. So he went out and shot the additional material himself.
What we actually have now in the form of the Theatrical is Carpenters cut of the movie even though he didn’t take the credit for it.
Carpenter regrets having to do this to Rosenthal… for reasons that he would hate the same thing done to him but he felt it was necessary to give the fans something more of what they expected.
Makes me wonder what Rosenthals cut of Halloween II is like then, considering that outside of the death scenes and the great climactic chase scene there’s not much more going for it. In fact I think the death scenes and the chase scenes are the best part of it, You can just sense Carpenters style all over them.
Just look at what Rosenthal did to Halloween:Resurrection. That movie is as far from Carpenters original than any of the other sequels in terms of tension, terror and suspense. I think that might just give you a clue as to how Rosenthals cut of Halloween II will be. Maybe Lionsgate feel the same as Universal initially did and are actually doing us a favour by NOT releasing it.
What do you guys think?
