This whole RZ H1 mask issue from yesterday really rubbed me wrong and I’m sorry to bring this up again, but it made me wonder, when is recasting ok?
It seems to be tolerated when an independent mask maker recast work from a company (aka Don Post, Cinema Secrets) or from someone that profited or took part in a Halloween film (aka Wayne Toth FX, KNBX), but it’s not tolerated when an independent mask marker recasts another independent mask maker’s work. To me, this is the unwritten law that I believe in.
So I ask, even if Sam recasted the face of the Myers Animatronic, which by the way I don’t believe he did because he’d never spend $250 to get that thing, what is the problem? Some of the people that were upset about it yesterday have bought a Nightmare Man, a Psycho, a Nightmare, a Myers based on a life cast, and praised at the highest level Bryan’s recasted Melody Kirk. For those that were so mad about it, what is the problem? And if you were so mad, I guess you should throw away most of your collection.
Or is there something that I’m missing that brought such animosity to Sam’s project?
I feel ya Chris…almost EVERY myers mask we have is a recast…I don’t have one mask in my collection that is a recast anymore because I like to have original’s.
Look at all those H6’s floating around…all recasts.
I think the general feeling is that, like you said, its okay when its a mass produced item and it isnt when its independent. The line gets fuzzy in this case because the animatronic is a mass produced item, but since Wayne is a member on this forum he takes on more of an independent role than that of a big company.
I see it like you do Chris, but my main beef is when people recast things, but try to lie about it by claiming it’s not a recast, when it is, or pass it off as their own work.
Example, ‘I sculpted this’ or ‘this is from the movie mold’ etc… when they are simply recasted from other masks.
Sorry Chris but i think that is a bad idea to be a public discussion again,i never said anything people mentioned my name,and i asked if this is going to happend let me know so i can grab one animatronic head my self and make the same thing,i m sculpting a new h9 for months now and i felt like shit when i saw Toth gave the sculpt to a company all my work is going to trash,this can start an era that no real sculpts will exist out there only retools and recasts,thats not accpetable for me as an artist…

not all are re-casts…I bought the molds/masters to them and I am now offering them…that is not recasting! It’s re-releasing what someone else no longer wants to or can produce anymore…
The way I see it is that all of the “COVETED” masks in the Myers fan base are all recast. Plain and simple. All of the 75 Kirk recasts which are far too many to list. The H6’s, H20’s, Resurrections, Silver Shamrocks’, etc. ALL RECAST!
No one is sculpting their own H3 set, or any of the other “Screen Accurate” masks when there are sources available that link to the actual screen used sources. That is just the way it is.
There are some talented sculptors here, but how often do you see original sculpt masks in demand? Not nearly as often as those that are of the recast “screen accurate” variety.
You guys beat the ever living Frack out of the dead horse with these topics. But it is the same in every hobby. Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Model kits, etc.
You can debate it forever and no one will ever decide on a true stance which makes sense. Bottom line!
What we buy are Indy masks. Independent masks. Masks sold underground. Unauthorized replicas from the eyes of the movie co… Remember where your masks originated from. Remember how it all started. Remember who were the one s who first gave us a chance to own a decent screen replica…
We could have just bought a cheap mass produced item but we ended up here. I believe once we all start collecting or making indy masks we are in the same boat and are all in this together… It would truely ruin everything and would be meaningless if one indy maker were to recast the other indy maker.
When there is a maker out there who does not sculpt from scratch but uses molds from others, who claims he is the best sculpter on this site, who claims he has God by his side just makes me laugh. He puts out a mask secretly under the table for around 1k. Why is that?? He has nothing to hide or does he?
Hell yeah, I wanted one but wait! Them eyebrows resemble those of a missing Kirk not a retooled mold. It looked so good I almost thought it was the new retooled KH/DW. Now why is this mask a secret when it was sculpted from scratch?? But what do I know, I don’t make masks. The maker claimed he has the hands of God…

You probablly talking about me,well when i make a live video sculpting a very very accurate mask i hope people like you to say sorry and get out of this site once and for all,thats why ill do it.I believe Jesus wich is Gods words in flesh and this give me power to breathe to live to sculpt and everything,plain and simple.Throw your hates somewere else guys.
Nice post!! I agree with that… Sam does NOT recast anything! He is TOTALLY against it… Again, he had the screenused H4 in front of him for days & did NOT recast it…
You cannot say it’s ok for a older mask to be recast & not a new one. A recast is a recast period… I know besides Sam, Myers04 sculpts, Mabry does & the Addison member… I’m sure there is more but the rest are in fact recasts!
To much talk about re-casting…most masks are based off a 75 kirk anyways so imo they are all recast,but guess what…THEY look cool to me…all the artist we have make awesome masks,why all this fighting…this hooby is suppose to be fun not fighting…if you dont like someones work DONT buy it plan and simple…and really since when did we get so many Mask making experts???
