I can’t speak for that actual website… but the Yak/Yak belly hair that myself and others have purchased recently doesn’t come close to the consistency of the 75 Kirk hair. But that picture makes it look somewhat close, although the fibers do look thicker and more course. MMP was one of the first companies I know of to use Yak hair on their masks and it looked horrid. It was very thick, poofy, and hard to style. Probably the next worst to mandala wool, which they also used around the 2003-2004 period. If anyone wants to take a risk and order Yak hair feel free… but I haven’t found any that comes close to the Kirk stuff and I’ve wasted enough money trying to find the right stuff. So for me, mohair and crepe until something better comes along!
It’s a weird deal. I spent the past few days looking for the paper work we had on the hair but couldn’t locate it yet. I do recall they also said it was free of any unnatural dye which at first I thought meant it was straight from the yak to the mask but it could have been treated chemically with natural dye or coloring of some sort. We then ordered yak hair and as most have said it wasn’t exact. Different samples from different web sites even showed large variances in comparison of texture, thickness, light reflectivity, etc., etc. I think that the school was correct - it is yak belly hair, also confirmed by former DPS employees, but I think that treatment of the hair in the 70’s compared to now must be the culprit of why consistency, texture, etc. are off. I agree with Mr. Eades that Mohair, like on the KH/DWs, is the best match thus far. Although, whatever Nik has been using on his masks looks pretty damn close.
Bill Malone told me Crape Hair was used on the “Kirk’s” that came out of DPS during his time. He told me this about 2 months back and confirmed by DP, Jr. at MaskFest.
I wasn’t there so I have no clue. Erik Yeager and Rob Tharp told me Yak hair which is what I meant by former DPS employees verified the lab results. I think Malone and Tharp need to arm wrestle this one out !
