This mask is undoubtedly the rarest and arguably the most known mask in the community. Two were made, both were destroyed. But in it’s glory days it was praised like no other. So if any of you are familiar with it and love it, what makes it so awesome to you? If you are familiar and don’t love it, what makes it so… not awesome (? lol) to you? I’d just like to hear everyone’s opinion on it ![]()

People often covet what they cant have (see the current KH mask thread for evidence of this).
One problem with the rare is that it never had the chance to compete with other masks on an even playing field, so we’ll really never know how well it would have stood up. No array of costume shots with special angles of light, no artificial shadowing on the mask like so many replicas now. Want to see how ahead of his time in this hobby Ken was, just look at the doctored KH/DW mask in this photo:

This is what we do to most masks now to get that screenshot look in natural light. I could just imagine what could be done with a Rare in similar circumstances. Yeah yeah, I know, some call it sacrilege to mark up a KH/DW like that, but the mask displays better this way and that matters more to me than preservation. If it’s my mask, let me do with it as I please, please.
I liked the Rare better than the KHDW and don’t know why he decided not to run the it. I’ve owned 2 KHDW’s and they were of the highest quality I’ve ever owned though, in regards to the material.
This hobby is an anomaly where people will spend loads of cash on something sight-unseen with an absurdly long unknown wait time. I can’t explain it, but was caught up in it briefly myself.
If Ken offered a run the rare up for sale, I would imagine he could buy a second home with the proceeds, but not with my money. I just don’t have the budget for $2000+ masks anymore.
As always, everything here is IMO.
I’m a lifelong artist and extremely picky not only with my art, but my choices. So I was looking for the best possible leatherface mask and Michael Myers mask many years ago and landed here and right off I saw obscure images of the rare and it was just cool as f^^^^. Within a year I had about 35 Myers masks, which I coveted not only for their accuracy but as individual works of art. I was hooked. Then I had the chance to get a KHDW. The images of the copy were so beautiful. The mask was sublime. So I got it. Upon arrival I was blown away and still am to this day. The Rare is not the end all that the KHDW is, and I believe the mystery that it is shrouded in is in part due to Ken really killing it with the KHDW. I think having the hero to take notes from made all the difference. The difference between images as source material and the physical item is huge as an artist.
The Rare was just as highly regarded if not more so before the khdw was released.

Think this is one of the best pics of the Rare not…being worn! Shows the shape and formation of the mask very well! Just sheer beautiful…
I haven’t seen one yet that can compare too it! ![]()
Another great photo of it, a painted, uncut blank:

It’s called the rare because he only made 2. Both were given to Dick and both were destroyed. He destroyed the mold and I don’t believe he has a master.

I FIRMLY BELIEVE BOTH RARES STILL EXIST! It would be nice if we can openly talk about the evidence that came to light but disappeared. Where did the pictures of both masks next to each other on “you know whos” work bench go? what about the pics of the haired version dehaired and ready for molding or the pics of the blanks that were made out of it. So really TWO masks were sent to a professional Mask maker who openly admited to having a mask crush on it and even stated (no one will ever get a rare before me) and they BOTH were sent to him and destroyed during restoration? Does any of that sound the least bit legit? If anyone has those pictures I’d love to check them out again… They were posted maybe 10-15 years ago.
Man, am I out of the loop on this one…
Story goes Dick sent both the rares to A.S. a member stumbled onto the images that were not supposed to be public. This part is known. Andrew said it was for restoration work and he wasn’t molding them and they wont be for sale yet the photos say different. It show a painted rare (the one we all know most likely) and a blank rare with a white basecoat on a work table. You could see where there were hair fibers left on the one that was pictured on the left. The problem was why would he have removed the hair if he wasnt molding? The masks did not appear to be rotting so it was believed he was casting them. There was also a picture of someone wearing one. There were around 5 pictures I think in all. Then it either got resolved and I didn’t hear about it or what, but regardless It seemed like it was just slept under the rug because people just stopped talking about it all together. This was around 12 plus years ago.
I see.
Perhaps replacing the hair was a part of the “restoration” that Dick asked for? I doubt that, but I guess we’ll never know.
It’s such a bummer that during the peak of this hobby there were seemingly endless examples of dishonesty and theft.
The Rare was the first Shape mask I stumbled upon that looked like the actual mask in the movie. This was back in the late 90s or so when there were no other options outside of DPS. Made me question even more why the sequels could never get the mask right either.
Hey Thanks. Yes this was One of them. Any info on this or am I just mis remembering things?
Figured I would come here since the thread is getting some attention again. Kenny outlined it correctly.
Ken made two rare masks (although I don’t believe he only pulled 2, which you’ll soon see why). Dick owned “both”. Dick sent it to Andrew to restore, and it was destroyed in the process due to it being stripped to recast.
for years the only information we heard about this was from an email I got from Dick warlock where he just said “both rare masks were sent to Andrew for preservation and destroyed.” Or something along those lines.
A couple of years later Andrew posted a photo that he had of the original rare, but for those of you who remember photo bucket you used to be able to take out the specific photo details from the URL and get routed back to the person’s general photo bucket account. This was done and discovered was not only photos of the OG rare, but also Dick’s copies being molded and recast, along with a “test blank” that was pulled and kept by Ken, which is now Long gone. Here are the photos. I put the “R” and “O” on them years ago to differentiate the OG and the recast
So, this Andrew guy recast the mask and then just disappeared? Didn’t try to pass off his theft as an original concept to make a buck? Weird.
Good to see you on here again, by the way. I hope the last couple of years have been good to you.
Nah Andrew is still around, although I don’t know how much making he does now. He didn’t make and sell copies and stuff no, just the two masks were ruined in the process shown above.
Thank you, ditto
.
