Was just wondering how this site and hobby used to be years ago. I’ve seen some people say it’s dead and I’ve only been around here almost 2 years so I don’t have much to go on. What was different then compared to now. This site and this hobby
It’s not dead lol I am back after 7 years not active. Some makers have come and gone with people I used to chat with daily. New friends and old alike this site and the hobby is very much alive. With a new film in a few months we really couldn’t ask for much more
I didn’t think it was dead I just saw something the other day with an old member who said this site is dead etc, so I wondered if things were better years back
First of all I love this site, and first joined in 2006 before leaving for 6 years or so. And I can tell you it seemed more active back then. And I think a lot of it had to do with excitement around the RZ films being made. But the site just seemed busier then. Not better, but busier for sure. Maybe I’m dreaming idk. I just don’t see many of the old members posting now. I remember the first NAG masks, the screen used…and all the DB2 excitement. The old masks were all the rage. I never hear about the Maniac, Psycho, Second Stab, etc anymore. You barely even hear about the Warlock anymore. And new masks come along, I get it. It’s just different. I feel like a lot of members wouldn’t even recognize what this place used to be. Does anyone remember Art by Mark? Remember when JC just did knives? Maybe the new movie will generate some interest. That’s largely why I’m back
A lot of people are fans of this franchise but not everyone is a superfan like a lot of people on this site. This site gets a lot more active when a new movie is coming out. We havent had one in 9 years. Also with each movie comes new fans. They’ll probably be a huge spike in traffic and new members after the films release.
I can see the Psycho and Warlock being the talk of the town. To this day them are 2 of my favorite masks in the top 5 list. I bet they did have a lot fun just being new too the indy mask game and having these badass Myer’s masks too have fun with unlike before when you had them crappy DP Chalkface and ole blue lips. So the Psycho and Warlock were like gems for sure… Had too have the right contacts too get in on the good stuff. Word of mouth you might say. From what I also understand if you wasn’t a member here and you ask a fellow member where they got their mask…they would not share any info. ‘‘To the back of the line sir’’ ‘‘Awww shucks…’’
And you know some people just get burned out. After this long how many times have we covered the same old topics “what’s your favorite this? Who is your favorite that? Why did so in so do whatever” lol. I’m as guilty as anyone. Now that I’m back I’m much more of a lurker than a poster, so maybe a lot of the older guys are now doing that as well. I would say it’ll pick up around Oct 19th
Also back then you had all these scammers or at least a few. Sure there are scammers now, but the HMK crap etc. New folks wouldn’t know anything about that. I had to ask around and search to find out about it
Blame Facebook…back then this was the only place to go for all Myers…sure…other sites…HMA,Universal Army, horror bid…they were more monster masks…this was the total Myers package…used to hang out here alot and Nightowl forum…goodtimes
Honestly I never knew there was a Myers mask hobby . Or replica masks. Found out while looking up Spider-Man costumes and found a cosplay prop site rpf. Then bought a Elrod mask and thought that’s all there was until looking up costumes and it brought me here. Now I’ve got H2SM new mold and two blank shats, 2 sets of coveralls, replica H1 pumpkin and friends who think I’m obsessed.
Lol. Same here. I’ve always been a huge fan etc but this year started collecting and have got some really nice items. All will be on display for HalloweeN of course. And to those that say I’m obsessed…they’re damn right:)
More fun? In the early days I’d say it was more hostile. I can’t even remember what my first screen name was because it was with a different e-mail account and several PC’s ago so I lost the info and had to sign up again, but asking simple questions about masks would sometimes end up with mocking answers as if an unorganized underground hobby that then most often relied on checks through the mail and money orders and finding the right e-mail addresses was well documented. Most mask makers didn’t have real websites then, and it was before Facebook, Twitter, and even Myspace.
There was still a lot of drama just a few years back, I mean several high profile mask makers and finishers were banned not that long ago for various controversies. It was more active then, and new masks were coming out all the time, but it’s more pleasant now.
The mystery of the search was great in the late 90’s to early 2000’s when SSN was king and a lot of mask makers were just starting out, but it was still a wild west situation. I was more so on the various sites that would congregate to become the official Halloween site and forum (which is the result of merging about 4-5 sites, not all at once though) because it could be so rough here sometimes and because I didn’t have the money back then and so temptation was tough.
Yeah. Thankfully no one here that I know of has acted like a jerk to newbies or newcomers. Just because a person doesn’t know there were more than one mask used in the movie doesn’t mean he isn’t a fan. My cousin loves horror, he just doesn’t get all anal and detailed that collectors can get. I started getting all detailed about the new mask and he said “ I don’t care about the mask, as long as it’s bloody and white people are killing each other I’ll be happy”.
Honestly i joined in 2010, and back then i was more of a lurker just browsing around and yea i do remember there was a lot of hostility. A lot of issues between mask makers as well, then i disappeared and now after 8 years i came back. My wife hates it and says i’m obsessed, i’m not gonna lie i am and i love it lol.
For the longest I was a lurker on this site. I always liked reading but didnt finally make an account until years later. I do remember recalling a whole ordeal years ago over a second stab mask that was supposed to be fixed or something and the guy decided not to give it back. So many members fought for that guy to get his mask back, then he gets it back and throws it away. Anybody remember this??
