The mask on the mannequin at least was promotional and made after filming, not sure about the mask fest copy though. I think that’s the only copy I’ve seen surface with a mouth slit and we’re not even sure what, if any, scenes it was used for.
I put this together on my phone, I hope the photo comes through with enough quality to see the mouth slits. Unfortunately I can’t share some of the full photos, but the trailer mask, car scene mask, Nick Castle mask, and Ryan Turek mask can all be found easily online.
Out of all the masks I’ve seen, every one either had a mouth slit, or the photo was too dark to tell, the one posted by Ryan Turek aside.
There is a little bit of a trick in this photo. Something I haven’t seen pointed out before. Bonus points to whoever catches it.
Side note, Nick Castle’s mask is absolutely slit. View his “unboxing” video on twitter.
Sweet collage! What about the one in the video that shows the lips not opening? The ones on screen are the ones I’m curious about, as opposed to the promo copies.
Speaking of the nick castle photos, was that one his copy of what?
The castle mask in referring to is the one he’s holding in the collage you posted, not the one from castles video in the video I posted. And when was this used on screen?
The mask in the car scene from the photo you posted is too dark for me to see a slit, idk if my phone screen is the problem or what.
Definitely a few more film masks have skits than I initially thought.
We know they made 3 for filming, right? Then did they make the other 3 or so for reshoots or throughout the duration of filming?
The Castle mask from the promo was used for Nick’s scene. You can see Nelson putting it on him on set. There is also a shot of Nick in a trailer wearing it.
The mask you circled was a photo from Ryan Turek. You’d have to ask him, but he says it’s screen used so I’m inclined to believe him. It’s painted correctly, unlike the promo masks. I have a theory that it’s a stunt mask. I’ll explain that in a second.
They made three masks. One hero, one stunt, one “set dressing” copy. This is exactly what Chris says in the Prosthetic’s magazine. They made two masks for additional photography. I was not told what they were used for.
Take a look as well at the mask from the shower scene. You can also see it on JJC. Again, a clearly slit mouth.
I believe it’s one of the stunt masks, and the mask that Ryan Turek has on the dog in his Instagram photo.
Now, I don’t have enough photos to confirm that yet, but I believe it due to its strange eye cut and it’s paint job.
Either way, I have yet to see a mask on screen that does not have the mouth slit. As for the car scene, I’ve lightened a shot from your video and the original photo I posted. I’m viewing on my phone at full brightness and the slit is clear as day to me.
Notice how in the BTS pic it looks like there’s a slit, but in Ryan’s photo there doesn’t appear to be one. Some of them definitely have mouth slits, no question. But others look they give the illusion of a slit, IDK. I’d like to see actual photos close of the masks, not screenshots or BTS (unless super clear close up on the mouth like the photo of Castle holding his mask).
Take a closer look. The mask Ryan has in the video and the one on the dog are two different masks. The one on the dog as I mentioned is a stunt, I believe. I know the mask in his video is one of the end scene masks. Which as you can see in the photo you posted, does indeed have a mouth slit…
Again, I haven’t seen a single screen used copy that did not have the slit. Chris Nelson paid attention to the details, I don’t see him missing this. I haven’t seen any promo copies unslit either, for that matter. If you have a photo that definitively shows a mask without one, I’d love to see it.
This thread ultimately boils down to… ToTs mask… should it have the slit? Yes. The real masks did, if not EVERY one, overwhelmingly, the masks did have the mouth slit.
If it seemed I was suggesting that the mask on the dog and the mask he’s holding are one in the same, I apologize as that is not what I was getting at. I was getting at in the two photos i posted, one BTS, the other one Ryan posted, those are the same. Not the one on the dog vs the one he’s holding.
I don’t see a mouth slit in the photo I posted of Ryan’s mask (the one he’s holding, not the one on the dog).
The TOTS should have a slit, yeah, just not a gash as most of them do.
As I said the other photo you posted of the trunk mask is too dark to see if any mouth slit is present, at least on my phone screen.
Besides, my personal preference is a mouth slit, but most of the “large mold” TOTs masks have a huge hole for a mouth as opposed to a slit.
This is my take on it. If there wasn’t a mouth slit on the mask in the movie, why would there be extra manufacturing money spent on putting a slit on the sellable one? Just doesn’t make sense to me
So people can breath properly, haha. There were definitely slits, 1962 pointed that out excellently. I just think they’re so hard to see/tell in some scenes that it gives the illusion of no slits
I don’t disagree with you about how well ToTs did the slits. That is a totally different story. I’ve seen some BAD ones. Like send that shit back and get a refund bad. lol
I wish they didn’t cut them, as it would have given us the chance to take our time and cut it nicely. I don’t know what the thinking was. Their Kirk, Spock, H6, and I’m sure plenty of others come without the mouth slit. Hopefully the 2019 run has better copies with either closed mouths or more careful slits.
