Another dumb question…the latex smell. I put on the mask once and I can’t get the smell of it off me. Is it a good idea to wipe the interior down with soap and water too in order to help minimize the smell?
It will help to get any of the residual off, and help with the smell, but it will always be there in some form or fashion. Over time it will subside.
And one more thing with the hair styling, just don’t go super heavy with the spray or gel. With spray, you just want to mist it so it’s getting all the hair, but keep it minimal and not go too heavy. Same idea if you use the gel, just light amounts, as you don’t want the hair to clump together too much. If it does clump up, you can use one of those dog or cat brushes with the really fine flexible metal bristles and just lightly brush at it to loosen it up.
Basically, less is more. It’s a trial and error process half the time for me, and it can take me a good hour or so to really get it where I want it. I go the less is more route so that I have wiggle room in case I’m not fully satisfied with the first round. Once you have it where you want and are happy with it, then one last go over the surface of the hair with spray to hold everything in place. Again, not heavy, just an even misting.
I really hope all this makes sense, as it’s hard to explain the exact method when it’s such a trial and error process. At least for me it is. Having a photo in front of you of the exact hair style your going for will definitely help.
Also, don’t be afraid to trim some of the hair in spots where you want some shorter pieces, such as the sides where the hairs flare out. Again, just little bits at a time, and keep checking to see if it’s where you want, so that you don’t trim too much.
I know this seems like a bit of a process, but I’ve become a master at working with what I got. I do everything possible to avoid a total rehair. I’m terrible at hairing a mask, so I do every possible thing I can do to get the stock hair looking proper.
Here’s a couple photos of one of my H78s that I recently did the hair on. Like I said, trial and error, and the look is all to your liking, not necessarily how I have mine here.
Looks really awesome! I do have a recommendation tho, if you have any liquid latex, try putting some on the glueline and pulling the hair directly above down onto it and hold for around 10 seconds, should hide the glueline and look even more awesome!
Yeah good idea, that sounds like an easy fix for the hairline. I just get paranoid at the thought of ripping hair off and regluing it back on. I have done it to a couple masks in the past and it never turned out the way I wanted. But this method is more up my alley. I can style hair pretty decently though!
That’s about the only gripe I have with this H78 is the hairline. Otherwise it’s a great mask.
Now I kinda wish I did that glue line fix before I styled the hair, but it won’t be hard to go ahead and do that even though it’s already styled up. It will pull forward just as easy. I will post an update pic once I get a bottle of liquid latex and do the fix. See how it turns out.
Here is a tots 78 that I overhauled. When I say overhauled I’m using the term loosely. All that was done was a good cleaning of the mask. A coat of matt clear spray paint. Accenting they already existing details on the mask. And styling the hair a bit. I did not move the hairline forward at all. This is my first go at doing this and I felt uncomfortable removing the hair. I still have to do the neck work. I had to visit quite a few Spirit Halloween stores to get a couple good candidates for overhaul. As everyone probably already knows they vary from one mask to the next. Mainly the eyehole cuts and hair color. Let me know what you guys think.
On any mask whether you plan on wearing it or not, corn starch should be applied to the inside. Just get an old spice container and refill it with corn starch. Standing the mask on its head, sprinkle it everywhere inside. Next take a damp rag and rub it all around the inside paying attention to under the chin and the neck area where the latex actually starts. Pretty much all masks start deterioration in this area. Once its dry inside give it another coat and just let that one stay till you wear it. Is it messy? You bet your old rotten DP Mask it is. Its gonna get in the hair and on the outside of the mask. dont sweat the little things. Wipe it off. It’s more important to keep your mask sweat free. That should kill any residual latex odor.
Dont be scared of the hair if your gonna do these masks you gotta learn and what better candidate than a Tots? The hair line is simple. Like Le Shape said above, latex and fold it down it works good too. But you can take it one step further. Get clear tacky glue. Michael’s Walmart etc. Start at the ear and detatch the glued section of the hairline off to the other ear. No need to take it off the mask. Just lift it up and cut that straight glued factory lookin ass section off. Apply tacky glue lightly to the old section of flat hairline on the mask. Press the existing hair down 1/4 inch at a time with a rat tail comb or whatever you like using. Just ensure you stay away from that flat hairline look. Hope this helps
For the hair? I’d stay away from the gel guys as it’s a bitch to get it off. Aqua net works wonders. Mist the hair lightly with a water spray bottle first. Then Aqua net. Style shortly after. If you mess up spray it down again.
Thank you for the tips on the hairline man! Yeah I just got to dive in and give it a go. I appreciate how you explained things, I understood exactly what you are saying and feel a little more confident to get in there and go after it now.
Yeah I don’t use gel on mask hair either, but some people do it because it’s what they have laying around. Definitely worth it to just stop at the Dollar store and spend a couple bucks on a can of spray and avoid the gel.
For my mask hairlines I use E6000, it sticks really well and is really easy to control or re apply if needed. I recommend that just from my experience.
