WARNING: Halloween Ends SPOILER Thread: ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

David Gordon Green is the new Paul Thomas Anderson. Franchise killer! haha

I respect your opinion and I’m glad you loved it, but a grade A, Really? That’s what the original classic movie is, a grade A

So here’s my thoughts. I commend DGG for trying something way new with this franchise. I enjoyed 2018 and kills. Corey could have been done a little better. I’m still trying to figure out how he didn’t get locked up for that kid being dead but I guess he was that good at proving it wasn’t him intentionally. Laurie everytime she’s reading that damn story she’s writing it sounds like a fairytale from a kids play. The kills were very underwhelming, a lot of gore but not that exciting for a good bit of them. Michaels state of health does make more sense than if he was still like how he was in kills. He’s in his mid-later 60’s now and got brutally damaged in kills. It makes sense that even Corey was able to knock him on the ground which I can’t lie was pretty sad for me to watch Michael be that weak now. The ending however and the fight I think wouldn’t have been able to go better. Laurie got Michael and at the end of the day he is finally dead, a first I believe as this is the end of this story at least. It was very weird to see Michael have a little partner but I guess it makes sense he was trying to get somebody who could carry his work but didn’t go as planned. Im not going to say Ends was a good movie but I don’t want to say it’s bad, still beats H5, HR, RZH2. I did enjoy watching the movie. I think we should all be appreciative he is definitely dead considering he got made into meat patties but of course they leave the mask at home. Just a little reminder that while this trilogy is over, his movies aren’t. Nostalgia and the way they used it was good, especially at the end.

Hated it, they just basically ripped off Christine.

  1. Both Arnie and Corey Cunningham are the kid who gets bullied.

    \
  2. Corey Cunningham the kid who becomes obsessed and turns evil the closer he gets to the shape.

Arnie Cunningham the kid who becomes obsessed and turns evil the closer he gets to Christine.

  1. Corey Cunningham the kid who worked at a junkyard.

Arnie Cunningham fixed his car at the junkyard.

  1. Corey Cunningham sitting in his truck, puts the lights on and chasing the bullies down and kills them.

Arnie Cunningham, does the exact same thing.

  1. Both Corey and Arnie have dark hair, glasses, geeky, and awkward.

  2. Both Corey and Arnie get the girl only for her to find out the truth about them being evil.

DGG’s trilogy has moments of brilliance, but ultimately the experience feels bloated and murky. It reminds me of reading essays from students that had one or two good ideas and then sat down and stretched those into 30 pages to meet the assignment’s length criteria. Like those essays, DGG’s trilogy feels meandering and not fully conceptualized. He tries to touch on too many themes along the way and never really explores any of them in detail. His vision was, perhaps, too grandiose.

He came up with a half-dozen or more avenues to explore, but just barely touches on them before moving on to the next one. It makes the whole experience feel like a haphazard attempt at higher-brow horror. In reality, the entire trilogy was built around a couple of good ideas by a couple of guys who didn’t have the wherewithal to explore those ideas with any meaningful depth. A great storyteller could have constructed an entire film around a single theme presented in DGG’s trilogy. Instead, we get three or more themes per film, each of which is explored at the depth of a puddle.

The films ask us to contemplate some heavy themes but doesn’t provide the structure for the conversation. The biggest issue here is DGG’s desire to get his audience to process these themes and really think about them, but this is met with his complete inability to provide the catalyst for that discussion. It’s like he says, “Mob mentality. Ok, audience, discuss.” “PTSD and the effects of tragedy on the individual and community. Ok, audience, discuss.” “Evil permeates. Ok, audience, discuss.”

It’s clear to me that DGG is not a good storyteller.

To further my point, when I was in college studying English and Creative Writing I was taught that one of the most important jobs of a writer (when writing fiction) is the ability to suspend the audience’s disbelief. The moment an audience member is pulled out of the fictional world you’ve built because they feel something in the story is unrealistic, you’ve failed as a storyteller.

The number of times I was pulled from the fictional world of Haddonfield because I thought to myself, “that wouldn’t happen” or, “that doesn’t make any sense” or, “that’s really stupid” was so high that I never felt lost in the world DGG tried to create. I didn’t feel like I was in Haddonfield for more than glimmering moments at a time. That is the single largest contributing factor to this trilogy’s failure as a whole.

When I think back on John Carptenter’s HalloweeN, I am NEVER, NOT ONCE, pulled out of the story because of poor storytelling.

I could list all of the things from each DGG film that he whiffed on, or list all of the things he did that were terrific, but I don’t have that kind of time today. If anyone is interested in my take on these things let me know and I’ll set aside some time to explore them.

Overall, the trilogy stands as another failed attempt at recapturing the lighting in a bottle that John, Debrah, Dean, Tommy and the rest of the cast and crew were able to capture.

2018 - 8/10
Kills - 4/10
Ends - 6/10

Overall - 6/10

I don’t know what to think. Was I entertained? Yes I was. Did I like it? Ehhh maybe if it wasn’t supposed to be a Halloween movie. It didn’t feel like I was watching a Halloween movie. It was very misplaced. It’s not a movie I would need to watch again.

Hot take: I really think Kills was better than Ends.

it felt ten times more like a Halloween movie then that remake and its sequel did.

What Im baffled by is, everyone on this forum is a fan of the character Michael Myers. How could anyone be happy about him being gone?

Because, you can still go back and watch all the films, again, and if this IS the definitive conclusion to the franchise, and you can’t 100% say that with Malek Akkad still with the franchise, it has been around for over 40 years. there is only so many ways you can make a Halloween film.

Im in the mindset of “killing” Michael is fine. But you always do it in a way where he can come back

The name of the movie is Halloween Ends. I’m not sure if you missed that on your ticket stub?

Im very much aware. No need to be a smartass. Killing Michael goes against every thing they said leading up to this. It makes no sense. Why not just Kill Laurie and call it a day?

Regardless of what H4 wants you to believe - Myers was killed in h2. No one put out that fire. He was ash. He has been killed before.
They will likely restart again in 10 years or so with a straight up remake of some sort.

The original classic is beyond grades. It’s iconic.

Michael Myers’s is just lame now. I don’t want to see any more stories from this universe. Where do I turn in my fandom card

I thought H18 was awful, kills horrendous and Ends okay. It’s actually my favourite of the three.

it was a cheesy sloppily thrown together film that took no creative risks and dragged on until it’s final, soulless ending that really did nothing to add to the Myers lore, but certainly took away from it. its biggest issues are how bland it is and lacking autumnal feel it gave off. there really isn’t anything halloween about it. this was a chance to take a creative risk and instead the writers played it safe and ended the film in the most hilariously simpleminded way possible. it comes off vapid and hollow as well as amateurish lacking style and certainly substance. it is one of the worst films in the franchise not because of what it did do, it’s because of what it didn’t do. it’s an alarmingly long film that doesn’t really say or do much of anything. apathy is a good word to use to describe it and those of you not giving it a negative rating are playing well into the hands of the directors and writers who wanted to create the most simple, inoffensive installment possible. though taking away the Myers and Halloween ethos, as a standalone slasher/horror film it is completely unoriginal and hackneyed. it fairs terribly as both a Halloween movie and a slasher flick as it has no backbone and is moreover dull and boring. there was no point in making this film other than bringing an end to a highly flawed trilogy.

Agree

Finished it. Huh. It certainly was a moving picture. The cynical part of me enjoyed seeing that little shit die in the beginning, but speaking of that, it was a little irritating them going to the watch assholes die formula. I really dig the concept of infection of evil (or touch of evil if you’re a Judas priest fan). Michael was awesome, especially since it’s JJC, for the little time you saw him. I do wish his last kill was more a punch to the figuretive gut than just a simple neck snap. I do like the conclusion because at the end of the day Halloween was about three characters: Michael, Laurie, and Loomis. It was nice to finally see an end to that story. Love you all and overall rating 6.5/10
