I recently picked up a NAG 75K, finished off by Loper. This is actually the first and only Myers mask I own, although JC messaged me recently to telI me that I might want to start ordering a blank, so I’ll be adding another one eventually. (I’ve been in his line for just over three years now.) I also have some coveralls from Creepy Customs on pre-order. I haven’t cosplayed in ten years, but I’m starting to get the itch again with all of this quality gear I’ve been obtaining recently. But at the same time, I know how careful people are with their masks around here, what with the cornstarching, and keeping them out of the light, etc. So is it an absolutely ludicrous idea for me to want to take my mask to an all-day convention? Will the amount of sweating I’m bound to be doing inside of that mask all day be a fast track to mask rot?
It will certainly contribute to mask rot if you often wear this mask very often and sweat in them, but a single time at a one day conventions should be fine.
What about if you clean them immediately after their use, and keep them stored properly? Latex will always rot, but you can mitigate the process by scrubbing out the inside of the mask with a damp cloth, sponge, soapy water, and corn starch to trap the moisture, right?
Large amounts of money on a mask and not wearing it, doesn’t seem worth while, cause it eventually is going to rot anyways, so get the use out of it while you can
When it comes down to it you need to do what you think is right with your mask. I myself, sometimes wear my pieces at least once a year usually around Halloween. Even some of my higher end masks and rehauls. I think as long as you take care of the mask, you should be fine. Then again, listen to what others have to say as well. Hope this helped!
That would definitely help prolong the life of the mask, and those are the steps to take to reduce the impact of wearing the mask very frequently for prolonged periods of time.
I never wear my indie masks. They are solely for display. Spending $350 plus for a mask to wear it at a con is crazy imo. A TOTS rehaul is way more reasonable in my mind to wear to a con in lieu of an indie mask. I guess if money isn’t an issue to then do whatever you want with your mask LOL. But to each their own…that’s just my preference.
Doesn’t matter if it’s indy or Mass produced, it’s really just a piece of rubber with paint and hair at the end of the day, just like Freddy gloves are pieces of metal cut up with some knives on it and attached to a leather glove
The horror con I was considering suiting up for is now only 30 days away. The polarized response to this question has been interesting. I must say, the closer the day approaches, the more I think I want to do it. I was even considering getting maybe a black scleral contact lens for the left eye, that way when I do take the mask off, I’ll look like Tony Moran with his eye punched out. (Minus that gorgeous, curly mane he had.)
It is a mask, made to be worn, so wear it if you want to. There will be zero degradation if you wear them without stretching them a ton, and then clean the inside thoroughly but gently, with ideally distilled water, (easily gotten at any grocery store), and a light dusting of corn starch. Collectibles are meant to be enjoyed imo.
Update: so I decided to do it after all. The mask got quite a few compliments. I’m glad I did it, but I’m not gonna lie, it was insufferable at times. Had to take a few bathroom breaks to wipe that thing down. One time, when I took it off and turned it right-side up, sweat actually came pouring out. I made sure to mop up more regularly after that. It is now back inside of the Detolf, after a through wipe down with a damp rag, followed be a sweep of cornstarch.
Those are some fantastic pictures…Masks are made to be worn…if I couldn’t wear my Myers masks…I wouldn’t even bother buying them …you make a great Myers !
Good eye, yes. It was a blank Freddy finished off for me. And thanks. The only aspect of the outfit that wasn’t ideal was the ToTS knife. I was hoping Horror Express Studios would open up orders in time for the con, but they didn’t, so I had to make do. Just took a Scotch-Brite pad to the mirror finish to make it look somewhat more realistic.
