Who hated the new Halloween movie?

Yup, still enjoyed the movie despite it’s flaws. But hey, even Halloween 1 and 2 weren’t perfect movies.

True , I guess we’re lucky to get a little something. lol

Watched it 3 times now on Blu-Ray. Here’s things I didn’t like about it.

  1. The Dad and his jokes (no need for it imo)
  2. The little kid, Julian (I hated it when Vicki was getting killed and he runs past Dave and says… "you go up there, you’re gonna die Dave… so stupid)
  3. Dr. Sartain (I thought the actor himself was annoying)
  4. Michael just walking down the street (when the cops car hits him, seem out of place for MM just to walking down the middle of the street)
  5. The cop with the Cowboy hat (what you gonna do, cancel Halloween)
  6. Karen, i just felt she was so boring as hell (not a fan of the actress)
  7. The two cops sitting in there car (Total H5 rip off and I hated them two cops as well lol)

I can’t say I hated it…but it’s not one of my favorites…Dr thing…stupid…shallow characters…i did not care if any of them died.
I myself thought JLC acting was good…but not for a Halloween movie…seemed to forced to me and the ending was just horrible…common trap him…first off crazy ass bitch doesn’t work has a gun collection worth god knows how much money…and I’m guessing she had a engineering degree to rig up all that stuff to trap him…just to far out there for me…

It’s on the second tier of the Halloween franchise for me. Tier 1 is untouchable classic, and the only thing that sits there is the original. Tier 2 is for enjoyable, but basic slashers. Halloween 2, 4, and 2018 sit there. Halloween 2 and 4 edge it out because of Donald Pleasence, but that’s about it.

Well put :beers:

While certainly not perfect (what movie is), I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either. I lean more closer to the “loved it” spectrum. I mean, I will take this any day over H8. And yes there were a few things that I could have done without (doc putting on mask bit, etc) but I also understand that they had to get all the characters together for big finale. Sure they could have done it differently but hey it’s what we got.

I liked it but I didn’t find it scary. These movies are scary for girls and little kids. Always have been in my opinion.

Well she was a merit scholar…lol

Well since most of the movie was an homage to the franchise I really wouldnt call it a rip off. Michael very much walked down the streets in the original. In 78 he hid by the side of a station wagon next to the sidewalk and hides behind 10” diameter trees on the sidewalk to spy on people 15 feet away. Quite obvious he’s not a trick or treater. He drives around in broad daylight wearing a mask which is illegal. Hangs out on sidewalks outside of school staring and little kids running into him.Lol

Dr. Sartain exists soley to get Michael from the streets of Haddonfield to Laurie’s house miles from town. When you break it down, that’s it. No other purpose to his character. What they should have done is either have Laurie’s house in town or otherwise find some other non-ham-fisted way to get Michael to Laurie’s house. Maybe they could have done an homage to Halloween 4 with Michael in a police car unbeknownst to the driver.

100% on Sartain. This movie had a very hard time getting characters where they needed to be. It seems they had specific scenes in mind, but when it came to explaining how the characters got there it faltered. Those podcasters purpose is so he could get his mask. Sartain is so he could end up at Laurie’s. The police characters are ultimately pointless. Most of that characters were one dimensional. You just needed a body count.

And though I felt JLC did a good job in the role, Laurie did a terrible job at preparing for 40 years. She sees Michael in her front yard…she puts her back against her flimsy front door. Installed gates to shut in every doorway? Let me go in to every room and check if he’s in there. Have a cache of weapons to plow this dude down? Nah lets lock him in the basement with all the weapons, set a fire, and run away. She didn’t do much better than she did back in 1978.

It’s Halloween 1 played at 2X the speed with a quarter of the logic dunked in fanfare.

It wasn’t a bad movie…it just wasn’t worth erasing the entire franchise for.

_I watched Halloween 2018 a couple of times at the theaters and enjoyed the movie more then than I have watching it at home. I guess part of it is that the initial buzz of a new Halloween has worn off but the rest can be attributed to the flaws of the movie becoming more front and center. Still a good movie but I find H1-H4 superior and H2 (1981) simply blows it way, not even close for me.

What I didn’t like about the movie:
*The opening. Michael should not have been seen unmasked and the British guy yelling for Michael to “say something” was lame.
*Jamie Lee’s character - Unpopular opinion I know but as good as she acted I still didn’t like the Sarah Connor vibe, it was just overdone and forced at times.
*The twist with Sartain…really?
*The characters. I was just never really invested with them or found them that entertaining.

Good things about the movie:
*Michael was Michael. Outside of the unmasked crap he WAS Michael Myers. Very well acted and brutal without being ridiculous.
*The mask…I LOVE it! I know there’s mixed feelings about this mask but I think it is fantastic.
*The Halloween feel. A little more effort (than some of the more recent entries) went into making it feel like Halloween. Loved the Trick or Treaters in particular those wearing the H3 masks.
*Small throwbacks to other Halloween movies. I really like the nod to the earlier Halloween movies, it helped create the feel of watching a Halloween/Myers movie.

Something I liked and didn’t like at the same time…the reversal of roles with Jamie Lee and Michael. While it was a nod to the original Halloween it also seemed a little silly at times.

In short there was no need at all to “erase” Halloween II, I think a stronger movie would have been to continue after the events of that entry.

Interesting post mate - you would have left the sister stuff in ?

I would have continued after the events of H2 as well. The brother/sister thing never bothered me. I know Alyson said that is was a rumor that Michale was Laruie’s sister, but I think in they could have said something like this to tie in the events of the original H2.

“Alyson: Yeah when they found my Grandmother that night, she was taken straight to HMH. She was so doped up on meds, and freaking out after seeing her friends being butchered, she woke up in her hospital room screaming that MM was after her and that he was her Brother. She was also screaming that Dr. Looms tried to blow Michael up”

The original halloween wasnt scary either, maybe back then when it was released since it was something entirely new but slashers arent scary anymore no matter how good they are because we have seen them all. As for karen i really liked her and the performance and alongside the shape, JLC and the new the mask i think shes one of the best things in the film. I really like the relationship between her and JLC, seems she understood her more so than anybody else and liked how JLC and her own daughter couldnt connect anymore but she connected with her granddaughter. The scene at the restaurant i really liked as JLC is clearly hurt and broken and nobody sees that except karen, the way she looks at her grandmother is genuine, she sees her suffering and loves her.

I don’t hate any of the Halloween movies, hate is a strong word, but I didn’t like H:40, it just didn’t feel like a Halloween film. 1, 4, and 2 (2 though to a lesser extent than 1 and 4) feel like Halloween films (3 lacks The Shape/Michael but has that feeling and style consistent with 1 and 2). 5 and 6 despite all the weirdness and plot additions at least capture the general atmosphere and feeling for much of their run-time (6 more than 5, 5 goes off the rails and feels like a generic campy slasher most every time Tina and her friends are on screen while 6 keeps a consistent feel/atmosphere even when dealing with the cult/Thorn stuff).
I have no need to feel I should like a movie just because I like the franchise or the franchise has been starved for an entry. H:40 reminds me a lot of the new Star Wars films, trying to use fan service and flash to appease but not really understanding what made the original entry(ies) work. Keep in mind I haven’t seen the blu-ray at home because it hasn’t arrived yet, so I may soften my stance. I mean I hated RZH when it first came out, but now while I don’t necessarily like it, I can more easily find redeeming aspects to it (though it is much easier to separate RZH from the original Halloween entries than H:40 and the original entries).

I like Hallowen 2 more than this. Rick Rosenthal was more faithful to Carpenters filming style. I wish Nick Castle played the shape in the new one. One or 2 shots is not enough. The new Michael was too big. The Doctor’s “true self” took me out of the movie. Jamie Lee’s performance was the best thing about the new one. Watching on blu ray now has not changed my opinion at all since opening night.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, and I find it scary too. However, I don’t find it over the top scary, it’s right between the middle to me, which is great.

In my own opinion, I find the Michael Myers in the new movie a lot scarier than the 1978 one, it’s something about that aged Mask and the brutality that made me nope.

You have to take what you can get from horror nowadays, especially sequels to iconic films that happened four decades ago. I mean, let’s face it, NOTHING is going to top “Hereditary” any time soon. Expectations were sky high by anyone who is a fanatic or even a casual fan of the original. This installment gave us plenty. Was it perfect or even close? No way. Was it entertaining? Did we get a portrayal of Myers that was among the best? Were there great moments throughout? The answer to those questions is YES.

James Jude Courtney did an absolutely spectacular job of bringing The Shape back, 40 years later, with just the perfect amount of Castle and a renewed “thirst” for killing. Brutal yet mechanical. Spectacular.

The new mask, while many were initially (or even still are) disappointed, is a great new take on the classic look. We all had ideas about what the mask SHOULD look like but there is no way to please everyone. Great looking mask while staying true to the original.

The film has a nice look to it. Plenty of vibe and certainly plenty of the fall/seasonal feeling about it.

Dr. Sartain initially had me mega-annoyed. The Loomis copycat thing was not flying with me at all. The “twist” that came later was perfect. Anyone who isn’t into it has me puzzled. His intense desire to see Michael “in the wild”, in his natural environment doing what he only knows how to do and THEN facilitating his escape was a saving grace for his character. Loved it and it was total redemption for a character I thought was just put in place as a Loomis substitute. While that is still very much true, his character became worthy in my book once he killed Hawkins.

Jamie Lee Curtis was completely organic as Laurie and I truly believed the character. I believed it was Laurie Strode 40 years older that I was watching and she did a great job of showing the PTSD effects of her past with The Shape.

I can go on and on but here’s the things I didn’t care for, summed up…

The continuity problems people are complaining about, I agree with. The movie starts out extremely powerful and then, unfortunately, has peaks and valleys. As it moves forward, it gets to be somewhat of a bore at times.

The movie had entirely too many homage moments. I don’t mind a homage or two but this installment was loaded with them, spanning from the original through the Rob Zombie films. Very hard for me to not be annoyed by since a strong film should not rely on that. It feels cheapened.

The fortress that is Laurie’s house along with her daughter being trained to shoot and fight as a child felt way too over the top. I have no problems at all with a strong female lead and her turning the tables on the villain but all of those modifications to the house made me crazy. Too much of a typical Hollywood action film feel and a bit hard to watch. I just wasn’t buying it and it felt cheesy. Unfortunately, those two things resonate with me and overshadow how I feel about the film on a whole.

Overall, I give the film a 7/10. James Jude Courtney became an immediate legend with his portrayal of our beloved Michael Myers and deserves to be placed in the top of the ranks. For me it used to be Castle, Warlock, Mane(since I feel H5-Resurrection is crap). Now, it’s Castle, Warlock, Courtney, Mane. That alone excites the hell out of me about this movie and it is light years beyond the turds we were fed starting with H5. The thing I find odd is the fact that many people who criticize this film think those other putrid installments over the years are great or even worth a watch. For me, I was just happy to see things brought back to basics(mostly) with a great musical score by the master and one of the greatest Myers portrayals we will ever see.

Laurie Is overrated imo. Michael was great in this one! To have her running around with the cops, with a gun, was forcing her in there. He never really got to stalk and chase anyone; they had a great chance when Laurie’s niece saw him and started running…but blew it by letting her be saved by a neighbor. Heck, they never even showed the Myers house!
