Who hated the new Halloween movie?

I didnt hate it but i was very disappointed when i left the cinema. The whole beginning at the asylum with all the nutters going crazy was just terrible.

They showed too much of his face i thought.

They gave him big thudding footsteps which goes against the whole stealthy style of him

The best bit for me was the scene at the end in the room with the dummys.

I saw it opening night and havnt re watched it since tbh. Im hoping i love it once my 4k edition turns up and i re watch it, but to me its behind H1, H2 and RZ1

I wish they would have had more shots of Michael going into houses and killing random people. That was my favorite part and I loved watching him and just wondering what he was gonna do next.

I went in wanting to love, as I’m sure most did. I’ve seen it twice in the theaters and have yet to watch on video.

My big issues remain big issues and haven’t diminished with time or a second viewing:

  • Removing Michael’s self-directed motivation by having his escape an elaborate scheme cooked up by a mustache-twirling villain was idiotic and belonged in a far lesser movie than one with JLC and input from John Carpenter

-Laurie’s lifestyle makes sense to an extent but focusing on her to push a socio-political agenda instead of her and the two other people who were damaged by The Night He Came Home was a poor choice to the say the least. If anything, Tommy and Lindsay have probably had a harder time and should have at least been mentioned.

-The gore and kills in this film were not Myers, they were Voorhees, especially the head stomp. The contrivance of the manipulated escape also meant Michael didn’t stalk and just killed anyone he ran into. That’s Voorhees, not The Shape.

-The plot wastes entirely too much time on characters we don’t (nor should) give a shit about, like Sartain, those asinine kids, and Laurie’s daughter and son in law. There are very few people in the original film and this movie clogs up the works with people who serve as fodder and nothing more. That’s not what the first film was about, and if you’re going to sweep away all other sequels and tie in to the first film thematically, you should fully commit.

I loved JLC’s performance, the mask, and the score. Overall, I don’t hate the movie, but it’s a disappointment considering the potential it had. Not that quality matters a whole lot since it made a lot of money. I give it a solid C right below H20, which I didn’t like because it didn’t ignore the events of Halloween II, a movie I loathe intensely.

I also want to point out that Green admitted in an interview that they had NINETY drafts of the script. The interviewer asked him if he was serious and he repeated it. That’s a failure of creative direction and understanding of narrative. The fact that there are so many deleted scenes is also an indicator of a lack of clear tone and direction. Green and his guys wanted this to be a direct sequel to HalloweeN but also felt the need to homage the other sequels. That was a poor idea to begin with and it betrayed the entire point of this film. It’s not that difficult, either: Laurie survived The Night He Came Home. Tommy and Lindsay have gotten counseling and moved on but Laurie hasn’t. She’s a recluse and paranoid and lives in constant readiness for The Shape’s escape. He escapes ON HIS OWN and goes to Haddonfield on Halloween night, not to kill Laurie but to kill whomever crosses his path. Laurie finds out and sets out to stop what happened to her from happening to anyone else. That’s your story. You don’t need her to have children or grandchildren, a lunatic version of Loomis, nor a bunch of teenagers we don’t care about who are just there to die. Give us a new girl and maybe one friend who Laurie ends up running into in the middle of it all. Keep it lean and atmospheric and heavy on dread. Not sure why this was so hard to achieve, though I suspect a lot of it had to do with studio interference and perhaps Malek Akkad’s whims.

We should all make a script! You guys really make perfect spot on reviews. I’m thinking the same things but can’t express it like you guys. Lol

I liked the movie overall but didn’t find it scary in the slightest, and I still get tense watching H78 no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

I think their biggest problem was that they decided they needed to compete with other slashers rather than plough their own road and go more for stealth and tension. There were a couple of tense scenes in it, but as others have said it tended to do things as a by-the-numbers slasher. It had a very Friday 13th vibe in that the characters were mostly so annoying that you were rooting for Michael rather than hoping they’d get away, which is the polar opposite of H78 where you wanted the girls to survive and Michael was the definitive bad guy. And unlike in 1978, we’ve seen a ton of slashers in the last 40 years, so those elements were nothing new.

I was overall very disappointed w/ this film. The only saving grace really was portrayal of The Shape. Too many characters. I also felt they did a terrible job w/ the death scenes. DGG mentioned in interviews prior to the release that they wanted to have “postcard” scenes in the film that stick in your mind like the original. I feel they did not achieve this. The only scene close was when Michael was in the closet but the proceeding death was lame. The lighting was pretty bad too. They should have went w/ blue like the original and they should have had more neighborhood scenes.

I didn’t hate the movie…but I was left wanting more. I liked the overall story and the approach they took…I just have some creative differences. I wish there was more lurking and stalking…Michael watching people from the shadows or in background…we really only got that before he killed Oscar.

I hate the supporting characters. I had no emotional connection or interest in any of them except Laurie. Alyson was good and like how she basically saved the day at the end…but everyone else imo was terrible.

I hate to go there…but the cynic in me can’t help but notice the blatantly obvious politics of this movie. Ray’s character was terrible. Once again, a bumbling idiot of a husband being portrayed in TV/movies. We can’t show a husband being strong and masculine…god forbid. The reverse gender roles of Alyson and Cameron for the Halloween party, the kid Michael kills being interested in dance instead of hunting…it just seemed forced and not organic.

After seeing it a few more times…the hype and excitement has sort of worn off for me. The best thing about the movie for me is the portrayal of Michael and the mask. I think this is the best mask since H2 1981 and best portrayal of Michael since H2 1981.

Agreed. That was an epic sequence. Just one big bloodbath. I like to think of it as Michael’s revenge.

Agreed

Again, I agree. I actually hated most of the cast and couldn’t care less about them. Ray (the Dad) was just flipping annoying.

I mean…I can watch the movie and enjoy it for what it is…but the issues I have with it will always lurk in the back of my mind while watching. I am beyond glad they re-ignited this franchise and took it more seriously than some of the previous sequels. Like I said…I would have changed some things here or there creatively…but it was a good story and entertaining.

Many people might disagree with me but i actually enjoyed H20 more than H18.

In my mind, it’s H20 with a great mask! They think the magic is a showdown between Michael & Laurie and it isn’t.

I prefer rob zombie H1 how about that for a minority opinion lmao

I liked the fact it showed Michael was the true embodiment of evil. When presented with the mask, all the psychos went crazy and sensed the evil. He killed a kid he didn’t have to and was incredibly brutal with many of his kills. Overall JJC was a very solid Myers, and even though Laurie’s character was a bit over the top I found it overall entertaining and a worthy sequel

I’m with you. Even with the stupid brother/sister angle, I feel it’s a better film.

I cant tell if DGG was leaning more towards the democratic side or the Republican side, on one hand he was killing off “beta males” but on another he introduced those characters in the first place and had cross dressing.

Pretty much, I loved it. Music just made it perfect.

My biggest gripe with these movies is people watch them to see Michael, so give use more of Michael. I could care less about any of the other characters, even Laurie is kind of running her course for me.

I also feel they showed way to much of MM unmasked. I wish they didn’t do that.
