Why does it seem like the RZ movies get alot of hate on this forum? I actually have them in my top 5.
RZH 1 is one of my top favorite Halloween sequels as well.
It’s been quite a time, since I have seen Zombie’s second movie for the last time. It’s actually been such a long time that I don’t have an opinion on it at this moment.
So I just remembered that RZH 2 has a white horse and Loomis making speeches in it. No way, a Halloween movie having a white horse and Loomis making speeches is good. So RZH 2, you can shake hands with Halloween V and Halloween (2018). Three of the worst sequels ever. Still, I might rewatch it one day, hopefully I will make it to the end. Just want to make a definitive opinion.
RZH 1 is pure damn fun. I love it for what it is. Can’t believe there is a same director responsible for both of these movies.
Your right about 2018, i got mixed up with Kills, I think Kills is better than 2018. The symbolism behind the white horse is what RZ was going for, I still have it at #5. Halloween 4, 5 etc are all not that good imo

5. RZ2
They stink. He made the characters un likeable. Gave Michael a back story that we didn’t need. Made Loomis a awful person. and just trailer parked trashed everything. I put it up there right next to Halloween Ends. But that’s just my opinion.
Because they are absolutely terrible. One could argue that he was trying to put his own spin on the characters by doing something original. But, at the end of the day he failed miserably.
The final products were just exploitation B level films that reduced the source material to pure schlock. Now there is a place for these types of movies, exploitation grindhouse films, but not within a highly esteemed shall we say classic horror franchise.
If Zombie wants to make movies about inbred white trash families creating serial killer offspring then by all means have at it, just don’t call it Halloween and please don’t degenerate the characters we’ve grown to love over the years. And it would probably be best Zombie not tackle the screenplay on his own until he masters the craft of dialogue. Yikes. There were lines that read like a middle schooler wrote them.
Carpenter was clearly influenced by the master himself, Alfred Hitchcock when writing/directing Halloween and it shows in how masterfully crafted that film is. From the POV shots leading up to the house during the climax, the reveal of The Shape “appearing” from within the darkness and all of the mystery surrounding the motive of the antagonist.
Zombie was far more influenced by 70s exploitation movies made for cheap thrills. The best known one being The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. However, that one was a fluke. It just so happened the director Tobe Hooper was a talented filmmaker and was able to take the source material and turn it into an exceptionally well made film. Unfortunately, Zombie does not share this same talent as Hooper so we instead get subpar exploitation films. It is still hard to believe these were actually given the green light by a major studio.
Where would you rank the RZ movies out of the 13 films? Imo Halloween 3, 4 , 5 H20 etc arent that good at all, Ends was just horrible
Looking at the franchise as a whole is very difficult because it is so compartmentalized. The way I see it is we have the original Halloween which is easily a stand alone classic that did not warrant a sequel. The story ended superbly leaving the audience to speculate that he was still out there somewhere…
Now because the Original was so successfull the sequel was born and it did a fairly good job of recapturing some of the magic of the original, at least giving us fans a little more of what we loved. Unfortunately, there was a price to be paid by doing so. That of course was a convoluted story arc that was incredibly unnecessary and undermined the point of the original - random killer happens upon random kids and has no motive for doing so besides the sheer fact that he is evil. In Halloween II we now have a motive that actually weakens the antagonist. She wasn’t random after all. It was his sister.
Overall, I think Halloween II is an acceptable sequel for what it is. It’s no where near in line with the original but its still kind of cheap fun for us fans. Very much like what Jaws 2 was to Jaws,
Halloween III is simply pure blech from a filmmaking perspective. No, it’s not because The Shape isn’t in it but instead it’s because it is terrible storytelling/direcitng and acting. If you’re going to be creative and try something new make sure that the story you plan to tell is at least somewhat interesting. The script was written like a high school English class project. There was a reason we all hated this film when it first came out. Now that there are elites that run Halloween cult fandom, we see this movie finding a new audience and fanbase it really doesn’t deserve. It’s almost like a bizarre right of passage to gain entry to the Halloween movie cults to say you love this film. Maybe we should all just re-think this.
On to the clunkers Halloween 4, 5, 6. It;s the late 80s. Michael Myers is no longer scary anymore but we need to keep making these to compete with the Friday films. So who the hell is this Michael Myers in the first place? Oh yeah he’s that big guy in the coveralls that wears a white mask. What white mask you might ask? I don’t know, maybe check the Halloween costume shop and see if they have anything that would fit. Also grab some football shoulder pads and maybe a goalie chest piece so we can make this guy super big and intimidating. I mean wasn’t that what he was like in the original? Hell I’m not sure I even saw the orginal. Well in this one he’s gonna be climbing roofs, jumping onto trucks taking down local rednecks just like Arnold in the Terminator. Oh and let’s really get the old Doc in on the action every chance he gets. No subtle monologues this time. It’s going to be full on James Bond level action for this guy.
And it just gets stupider from here on out. I don’t think I can rank all of these films outside of the first two. I guess I’d have to go with…

Find another franchise to explore. Everything else is just the ooze at the bottom of the well.
I could definitely see another new film come 2028 to coincide with the 50th anniversry, if so i hope they do a completely fresh take on it, not as much gore…but more suspenseful like H1 vibe
Lets just leave it alone. Halloween is a classic jem. After that its just a money grab. Yes H2 was good. H3 was a stand alone classic. After that it was just a bunch of campy horror movies that centered around Michael. We love them because its a Halloween movie, but really after 2 they all seem to go downhill. But they will always hold a big part of my childhood, and regardless I will always love my Halloween franchise. excluding the Zombies and Halloween Ends flicks. Thats just my opinion.
There is nothing wrong about Rob Zombie’s first Halloween movie. But that’s only my opinion, of course.
some people don’t like change, I do like them as horror movie in general, but I can definitely see why they can be hated on as a HALLOWEEN movie. But I believe that they are good movies and I will die on that hill
Man, this thread just wants me to pop in my RZH DVD and enjoy it, as I always did. Might do it during the weekend.
I remember when Zombie’s Halloween was announced. I followed all of the updates and of course was extremely skeptical of Zombie remaking such a beloved classic.
It finally arrived and a friend and I went to see. I remember leaving the movie feeling kind of good about the experience. It was so cool to see the essence of the story of the original on the big screen.
As soon as it came out on DVD I was there to buy it. I grabbed it off the shelf, looked at the cover for a minute and then changed my mind. Instead I rented it.
After watching it again at home it finally occurred to me. This is not a good movie at all. The only reason I was okay with it at the theater was because I got to see some of those classic Halloween scenes on the big screen for the very first time with a paying audience. Scenes like Michael stalking the girls on the way home from school, Bob getting stabbed to the wall, etc. I had not yet seen the original in the theater so this was the closet I ever was to that.
Since then the fog has completely cleared and I have no desire to ever watch that film again. I get it, many of you are fans of this film. But then again many of you are fans of Halloween 4 Which I’ll never understand. After you’ve seen the original nothing can compete with it.
Halloween 4, imo, it’s better than Halloween V or 2018, but still not something I would die for. The movie being enjoyable has a lot to do with Danielle Harris performance, which was just breathtaking.
do it man, do you have the theatrical cut or the directors cut?
It has all the great violence and nudity, so it gotta be the director’s cut.
I agree, but my only complaint is the prison escape scene in the directors cut, but it is effective for making the audience feel uneasy so I’ll give it that
I just find out yesterday that Leslie Easterbrook got the role of the security guard mostly because she was cooperating with Zombie on one of his previous movies. Pretty interesting.
