Hey guys, got off work late. Enjoying some vodka (KennyD… )
Anyways.
I’ve been reading the Halloween II novel, which has the original version of the H2 script that Rick Rosenthal wanted, as Kirkus said.
Anyways, wondering this.
What if Myers, in Halloween one And two, DIDN’T wear the mask.
What if he just hid in the shadows and struck and killed who he needed to kill?
IS Myers Still scary Without his mask?
NO The Mask IMO is what makes him so scary cause you dont know who he is its Just creepy!
Kind Regards,Cade
Nah…woulda just been like an American Jack the Ripper!
That ghostly blank stare is why were all here…
I just dont think this site would be here (or at least as big) or the onslaught of sequels if not for the good ol’ quick fix Capt Kirk mask that started it all!
100% agreed!
Kind Regards,Cade
Would Myers be as scary without The Mask?
I think so… take Black Christmas (the original) for example, or Silence of the Lambs or The Shining. Scary, crazy killers who get things done without wearing a mask.
But perhaps Michael Myers wouldn’t be nearly as iconic as he is now if he didn’t have the mask, and instead was a character who remained in the shadows, unseen like the Black Christmas killer. A big reason Jason became so well-known throughout the world is the hockey mask, and he hasn’t even been that scary since the mid 1980’s imo.
I believe it all depends on the craftsmanship of the direction. Anyone can make a movie with a masked serial killer in it. The trick is to be creative, and skillful with manipulating an audience. Suspense and atmosphere was EVERYTHING with the first 3 Halloween films. Without it, they would not have been scary. The mask and it’s creepy features add another dimension to it, but take a look at Resurrection, dude, that movie is NOT scary, and it’s got the Myers mask in it. Also, we BARELY see the Myers mask in the first film. The first time we get a real sense of what it looks like is when he picks up the phone. That’s over an hour into the movie. And I think Carpenter already created a great and suspenseful film without showing you too much of the Bogeyman…
He was, however, just some dude in a Halloween mask.
On another note, Masks are inherently creepy anyway. Shit a HOCKEY mask in horror movie? IS that scary? Mostly no, but in some of the scenes of the Friday series, it is quite scary…
Certainly not as iconic without the mask that Loomis described his face as (strange, huh?) but if he were 7 ft. of “f-tard” as referenced in RZ’s H2…yeah, he’s still a big scary giant!
I don’t think he would be as scary. It’s all about the emotionless expression on that mask, and the fact that we don’t know what the hell is going on beneath it. It made him seem more inhuman, more of a killing machine.
Rob Zombie had his Myers unmasked for many scenes in H2…though Mane’s expressions were few, it killed the suspense to show so much of him.
Michael is THE SHAPE. Michael’s motives are unknown, you can’t reason with him, you can’t beg for mercy…that is what makes him scarier than many other slashers. The mask matches this perfectly because just as you can’t know what is going on in his mind you also can’t see what is going on behind the mask.
No…Michael WOULD NOT be as scary without the mask. Without the mask he becomes just another slasher rather than The Shape.
Without the mask it would not be as iconic.
It probably wouldn’t have been called a slasher flick but would’ve been stamped as a thriller.
Couldn’t have said it any better
I dont think Horror movies are scary anyhow, I lost that a LONG time ago but I know I would not like Michael without a mask, I remember as a kid only picking out G.I. Joes that had some type of mask or overhead helmet, it was the same with other figures if applicable.
Yes, he’s scary because he looks like this under the mask.
hell no, i see the mask as being “the shape”! the white mask is just pure creepy!
MichaelLantern is 100% right !
Exactley! I like the Black Christmas comparison that Frenzy mentioned too. I also like “He Know’s Your Alone” and that dude is unmasked. Just creepy lookin’! Halloween definitley benefits with the mask though no doubt
Say what?! I thought he looked like this:
agreed 100%
Sure there have been scary cinematic slashers who did their deeds sans the mask, ie Henry; Hannibal Lecter; etc but so much of their chilling aspects came from their voice, their facial expressions and these are things that The Shape is devoid of…he’s just blank, evil. Kinda like the look a great white shark has. you don’t see any emotion in it whereas with a mammal as scary as an attack may be, as humans we are still able to read their emotions and possible next moves because of their facial movements and vocal sounds.
thats a no brainer. what would the original Halloween be without that mask? exactly.
Totally agree, Benny!
