Great info in this thread so far. Considering how the giant clay sculpt and the DMC mask both have the sweeping right lower vent holes and they both appear to lack the lower chin deformity. Is it possible they could have shrunk that giant mask down and molded it?
Both of these are possible, though we will probably never get an answer.
Another question for those who don’t mind answering- was the 88 production blank taken off the mystery mask, which was a part 3 production mask, or at least from the same mold? And if that’s the case, how many of the movie masks are linked back to the part 3 Mask? Thanks guys! Love this thread.
The furthest we can trace that ‘Mystery Mask’ back to with certainty is 1985 (or at least the promotional material for A New Beginning). The masks from Part III - JGTH and VS all derive from the original mask to varying degrees.
The ‘88 Production’ masks were undoubtedly derivative of that ‘Mystery Mask’. Specific details present on the front side of the ‘Mystery Mask’ (weathering, cheek chevrons, etc) can be found on the ‘88 Production’ masks, as well as FrightStuff and JDF replicas.
Part 3- tons of Vac pulls of Vintage hockey mask until desired size was reached, then Vac pulls were pulled off that in clear.
Part 4- left over stunt from part 3.
Part 5- recast/Vac pulled from part 4 with split filled in.
And then after that, what?
Part 6-?
Part 7-?
Part 8-?
JGTH-?
And how is the VS hock derived from the original? Never heard this before! I thought it was an original sculpt.
Wasn’t the part 6 mask just cast off the part 3 TV promotion mask? Which was also used in one of the day dream/hallucination scenes in 5? And if they cast/molded using the top of the mask it would’ve enlarged it, which is why part 6 is larger? Them part 8 was cast off the part 6 mold? This is just stuff I have read in the past; not sure how accurate it is though. Some of the more knowledgeable members will probably correct this.
Part 6 - Recast of the Mystery Mask (The 6s are bigger than people think. So is the Mystery Mask.)
Part 7 - I think this is where the production blanks come from. This mask is smaller than all of the other masks (3-8). If you trim a JDF/Frightstuff blank as a part 7 and compare it to the 7s Mario Kirner released the scale matches up perfectly.
Part 8 - I think this mask is a recast of one of the part 6 masks. This is the biggest mask in the series but still comparable in size to the 6s.
JGTH - Seems like it could be some kind of recast of the 7. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure how this mask came to be. I’m sure it’s a recast of something. But what?
A JDF matches up very closely to the size of the Part 4 screen used hock, if you’ve seen the pic (which I’m assuming you have). But where did the production blanks come from overall? A recast of the Part 4 hero, from the mystery mask? From a part 5 Mask?
I can’t attach photos at the moment, but there are details specific to the frontside of the ‘Mystery Mask’ (weathering, chevrons, etc) found on the ‘Production 88’ masks as well as FrightStuff and JDF masks. Jason Farrell has good photo comparisons of the ‘Mystery Mask’ and a plaster casting taken from the inside of a ‘Production 88’ mask.
I’ve seen it and I don’t trust it. Have you seen pictures of Richard Brooker, Ted White, and CJ Graham holding a mask painted on blanks available now? The size doesn’t match.
Nope. It only shows the mask from the top. You don’t get to see the full mask with the measurement. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that someone who owned a screen used mask wasn’t completely honest about certain details.
Show me a straight on shot of the part 4 hero with the measuring tap on it and I would be more inclined to believe it.
