I have a HD straight shot pic Dario sent to a buddy of mine. I’ll see what I can do with bringing it to scale. And how large would you say a part 3/4Mask is, then? Measuring in the same direction as the pic Dario sent.
You can see the measuring tape almost to the base. It cuts off just before. With some proportions and the dimensions of a JDF or 88 production blank we could easily settle that.
I have to agree, I am skeptical of the “measuring” photo from Dario. We can’t see how he applied the tape measurer. It could be an inaccurate measurement.
However, if the Mystery Mask is an 82 blank, and a buck was made from the front, it would naturally be larger than the 82 masks were anyway. Logically speaking, there’s no reason the “production blanks” shouldn’t be larger than the original – and at that rate the JDF/Frightstuff blanks would be even larger as well.
This is sound logic. However, I can remember the year FrightStuff blanks were suddenly smaller. Tarallo’s explanation was that the urethane he used to produce a new buck that year had shrunk, and soon corrected this after recognizing the size difference himself. If the buck made from the ‘Mystery Mask’ is urethane, perhaps it too shrunk?
For posterity, here is an ‘88 Production’ blank. Stunning detail.
There’s no way JDF/Frightstuff blanks are larger than the Mystery Mask. I have nothing against the blanks that either one produces. They’re excellent blanks and both definitely have ties to the series even though which movie they originate is debatable.
I’ve seen the Mystery Mask in person and there’s no way it’s smaller than blanks from JDf/Frighstuff.
Amazing info guys. Threads like this is what keeps the community alive! I have one question, I know the part 3 mask was enlarged to look better on Richard Brooker, my question is how do you enlarge a hockey mask to begin with? I’ve never really understood that process.
Also what hock is the largest length wise? (From top to bottom? I know the p6 is much wider, but is it the same length as the p4,p5?
If the production blanks and axe cut Fright Stuff blanks are made from a buck that directly molded the top surface, how would they be smaller? Is the urethane shrinkage really something that could be accountable?
That’s what I figured. The holes in Dario’s mask measure 11mm almost exactly, as do the ones on the 88 production. I’m trying to scale a JDF blank and the hero using that hole reference to compare sizes of the 2d image.
Here’s a perfect example of why I don’t think the production blanks originate directly from the Mystery Mask or the part 4 hero or pretty much anything before Part 7.
I don’t know what blank was used to make this mask but the overall scale is much smaller than the mask used in part 3 or 4.
The vent hole on Dario’s mask may measure 11mm (allegedly) but the indention made during forming is going to be larger. The indention on that red production blank is 11mm but the drilled vent hole will be about 2mm smaller on average.
Not allegedly. Maybe his measurements are off for the mask as a whole but we know the vent hole above the right eye is 11 mm because it’s directly beside the ruler in the pic. Even If the ruler was misplaced on the hero mask like you claim he was doing, that wouldn’t effect the size of the vent hole.
I think it’s related to part 5. How do you explain the chin deformity and other details that match up with the part 5 mystery mask, hero, and part 3/4 hero?
