Is there actually any concrete answer on the Don Post / Shatner legal stuff? I never understood it in the first place. The Kirk mask was not what was seen on screen. It was altered into a ghostly white face. And the same mask was used again in HII.
Did the issues arise during the production for Halloween 4? After all they used a Kirk in that film but the conversion was completely different from the original. And I would say the H6 and H20 masks both feature enough Shape likeness to warrant legal issues if that were truly a problem.
I agree completely with the sentiment of not changing the mask. I have still never seen a mask “degrade” in the way that Nelson described as his inspiration for the final look of H18. Latex does not form creases and lines, and if they did, not to the extreme measure as seen on the final mask. It looks like Freddy drug his glove across the face of the mask. The sad eyes and protruding bottom jaw also are not contiguous with the original look. If it’s the SAME mask, and they’re legally allowed to use the look, WHY would they feel compelled to put their own spin on it? What’s wrong with getting the credit for actually FINALLY nailing that classic look again? Wouldn’t that be credit enough for an artist?
It’s frustrating as a fan who is told the original Shape is returning, only to see something not quite right but only so close. And on top of that, a “decayed” iteration much like the Rob Zombie films we have already seen. I just don’t get the thought process there.
nah thats all director’s choice…4 was a kirk of some kind (potentially a recast)…5 had a whacky director who had a certain idea of the mask…6 WAS them going back to the original style and wanting to look more 78…and so on…its a wide rumor spread that is true about going to court…but they can replicate the 78 if they want to they just havent
Fantastic read! Thank you!! So Trick Or Treat Studios is not the only licenser of the Myers Mask? There are still other license holders? How crazy would it be if don post re created a new line of Kirk masks based on the original mold?!
Don Post Studios closed shop in 2012. However Don Post Jr joined the Trick or Treat Studios team. Masks are still made at the Don Post factory, but now under TOTS. So technically they can do whatever they want since TOTS has the licenses for everything. Don Post is a TOTS brand now. TOTS is the only current license holder for Myers masks now that they have secured the RZ license. The last Myers mask license to be held by a different company was the RZ masks. Now that TOTS has secured that, they are now the exclusive license holder of the entire franchise as far as masks go.
Oh that’s awesome!!! I wonder then for the new film flashbacks if tots has access to original 75 molds or if it’s somehow 3-d printed or something? Any ideas there?
There wouldn’t be anything stopping them from doing that at least. If they had access to the old molds for anything, they have free reign to do what they want honestly. It all depends on what Don Post still has stashed away and what condition it’s in. From what I understand they don’t have much left as it pertains to Kirk or Myers. Which is a real bummer.
As for the flashback scene, they could easily use one of Justin’s Shats, Creeps, or Psychos tweaked by Chris Nelson if they really wanted to get authentic. As you know, all of those are derived from a real Kirk and would be a good place for them to start in order to get that authentic look for the flashback. It’s hard to say what they did there from those distant bts photos.
It could just be the 2018 clean mask, but I believe Nelson said it wasn’t that mask when someone had enquired about it. So the best course of action would of been to have Justin make a Shat, then have Nelson convert it. That way it’s about as authentic as it’s going to get at this point.
But who knows what they decided on. We have almost a year to wait in order to find out, lol, talk about torture.
Indeed!! I’d be surprised if there isn’t a new 78 style mask for their Halloween Kills collection. That would be a great way to make more money off of people who already bought the current 78 or boogeyman… especially if it’s the size of the h40. Hasn’t been a small H1 like that for the mass market in… forever? Lol
I also think there will be another Halloween 1978 mask for sale next year. I really do hope the flashback or flashbacks look good if it’s just the one we have seen already then I don’t think they could mess it up to much but if there are a lot more I hope they do keep with the original look
no problem! unfortunately the original molds were lost and the original master was stolen! for the real 75 kirk… This new kills flashback mask will be a brand new sculpt
I’m wondering if any of the 1978 flashbacks will feature any of the characters from the original movie. Such as Laurie Strode, Lynda, Annie, Bob, Dr. Loomis or Sheriff Brackett. if so, I really hope they get believable looking stand ins.
Tha’s a good point JLC sort of hinted at a flashback movie but as you pointed out it may only be like two scenes…in that 20 second clip there are two flashback glimpses…One with Mike behind the hedge and the other you can tell is a flashback by the older cop car
Well seeing as H18 was very profitable ($255,485,178 worldwide), it’s safe to assume that the budget was increased, perhaps to around $15m maximum, as Blumhouse always like to work with smaller budgets to increase their profit margin. I’d say one of the sticky points would be Jamie Lee Curtis. She is obviously the biggest star in the film, so she would come at a pretty price for a sequel to a very successful film, so that’s why I believe her involvement in HK is minimal, to decrease the amount they’d have to pay her.
I’m on the fence. I like the 2018 film but there are a few things that drove me mad. Example I wish that when they said it was the "Final confrontation that Laurie would have died. Or at least have Karen die. Having 3 leading ladies and not have any of them die makes the shape look incompetent and unable. I hope that Laurie dies in Halloween 3 so that we can move on from her.
