***Halloween Kills & Halloween Ends Discussion***

I think H’18 Michael is the best way to modernize Michael for today’s slasher audience.

Like I said, had A24 been behind a Halloween reboot, you probably would have gotten something closer to what you’re thinking about, a slower burn, complete stalking in the shadows. But that simply, unfortunately, isn’t marketable in most ways in terms of general broad appeal.

For me, I would be happy with either outcome. I loved H’18, I think they did the best job they could in terms of their overall goal of bringing Michael back to the frontlines in mainstream. I also wonder a lot what a more ‘indie’ Halloween film would look like. But I also question whether or not that would be as positively received by us hardcore fans, because I think a LOT of people would complain about it being a remake. So, for me, the best of both worlds is simply always having the original to go look at, and admire, and to have this new incarnation to also enjoy. I don’t want to see Halloween '78 again, personally, because I feel like that kind of lightning in a bottle just can’t be replicated. However, I think a new spin on the character arching back to the original (more than any of the sequels sans maybe Halloween II and even that’s debatable), was the best way to go in my opinion. I just think it’s just much more interesting overall, and does offer something a bit refreshing to see the aftermath of the original, forty years later, and in today’s climate.

Kills definitely delivers on the old school '78 Michael during the flashback, so I think that’ll please a lot of people.

It could still be a 2018 Myers setting, but they could still use tricks from both 78 and 81, like he could walk as he did and after getting hit or falling off a high area, could walk slower, comedy needs to be erased out of these films cause it’s not even funny, blue lighting wasn’t even used for night shots, and how many of the characters in 2018 are memorable? I hope this doesn’t sound like I’m being a dick, just trying to understand it more

I find it interesting that comedy is such a no-no to people now when it’s blatantly in the original.

I just think JJC is too big for H1 Myers…I agree with the above where it didnt feel like 78 Myers had returned…DGG and Mcbride admit to purposely making Michael bigger in 18 but dont explain why…Old people get shorter not taller…But other then that IDK…I watched H18 last night…I just dont understand why theyll never try to make everything how it was if its suppose to be same people, Its all appearence too and it isn’t the stalking or the way he kills…that stuff was fine…Just wish they went with someone Nick’s size

I understand that they were trying to modernize the film, but it took away the angst of the kills to see him killing every few minutes. It was like… ok. This has morphed into Scream and it’s not really showing anything distinct about Michael’s M.O. at all. I hope that Kills shows him stalking characters a bit more rather than just beating them to death instantly.

i vehemently disagree, personally. There were scenes of Michael stalking/watching in the distance in H18, probably not as much as in '78 but it was definitely there. The graveyard scene, the bathroom scene, hearing his breathing outside of Julian’s house, watching Oscar in the shadows. Sure, there are a lot of moments where he does go in the kill, but there’s also times where he kind of corners his victims (i.e Dana, Oscar, etc.) and takes his time.

Additionally, I think they finally brought back Michael’s slight struggle to fully kill quickly. He didn’t kill too quickly in the original. He struggled with Lynda, he struggled to choke Laurie. In H’18, it takes him a minute to kill Ray, and he struggles a bit with Vicky. I think his age plays a lot into why he tries his best to kill instantly in this timeline. He usually ends up killing people from behind/surprising them in H18.

Oddly enough, the actor they got to play Michael in the 78 flashback is about the same height and size Castle was when he played Michael.

Yep! And he’s a great guy! Think he’s easily going to be a huge fan favorite.

I agree with you, but I guess I just felt the pace was very quick. I did love H’18, I guess you are right that he chased Dana and Aaron down in broad daylight and did a similar stalking with them as he did with Annie.

I personally LOVED Dana Haines. She did such a good job, I was so happy for her when she kicked the hell out of his arm and locked the stall door. Lol.

Pacing was it’s biggest culprit. They cut it down severely, not necessarily in scenes much but more so chopped it up to reach the runtime. Not only that, but the film technically takes place over two days. It just had a lot to go through, it had a lot to set up. They had to establish Laurie 40 years later, establish where Michael was, establish the family aspect, bring in the podcasters, the first act (though it’s paced much better than the second act imo) just has a lot to get through. They mostly succeed, but I think with Kills and Ends they have a lot more freedom to just let scenes/sequences breathe.

To me, the cinematography in Halloween '18 is the best since the original, but you don’t really get to appreciate it as much because it’s a story much more suited for a ‘slower’ pace, rather than breakneck speed. Breakneck speed can work, for a story that requires it.

Oh! And did you ever read an early draft of the Halloween 2018 script? One thing that lowkey always bothered me about Dana is how she somewhat just kind of gave in (I get the choice) after grabbing the crow bar, but the script has her stabbing Michael in the foot with it, giving her somewhat of a fighting chance.

I did not read that script! But I personally saw her as defenseless so the kick was surprising. She was literally like a sheep getting eaten by a lion. She didn’t even use the crowbar, but her screams were CHILL inducing when her man was being slammed against the stall. Rhian Rhees should have won that MTV award, not Sandra Bullock.

Agreed. I see some fans saying the cast of Halloween 2018 was horrible and I’m like… what!!! Rhian Rees had one of the most realistic grueling survival screams I’ve heard. Jamie Lee Curtis gives a tour-de-force performance, as always! Judy Greer, I can say, which somewhat annoys me, got the short end of the stick as you can tell she was directed two different ways if you look at the BTS B-Roll. She has several different takes where she shows way more emotion than what made the final cut, so it’s clear DGG and co. asked for two different kinds of performances. I think it was to make her moments at the end more of a crowd pleasing moment, but it made Karen overall suffer slightly as a character even though she’s so rich for potential. Andi Matichak, though she doesn’t get MUCH to do, gives a really great, understated performance that isn’t honed in which I LOVED. The cast overall was really, really strong especially for a slasher film, down to even the extras/people who had one lines.

I adored the cast of H’18. But get ready for some controversial takes:

I did not like the character of Julian, I felt it introduced comedy at a time of despair and during the most quintessential “Halloween” scene of the film. I LOVED Vicky and Dave, what an iconic couple, perfect for the franchise. Dana and Aaron were amazing and introduced something refreshing to the plot. Alyson, I personally found very annoying. Didn’t care for her much at ALL despite her stabbing him at the end, and her screams during the chases. Karen’s “Gotcha.” was iconic and must not be forgotten! Loved her overall for being a badass when it counted.

I am so happy Vanessa and Marcus will get explored later on, we need more strong people of color in horror films. Vanessa is a BADASS! I got that vibe as soon as she glared at Michael in 2018, I was like yasss!

I think Julian was a fine character, that introduced a much needed breather before a big scare, but they did drop the ball with the ‘Oh Shit’ line. Actually, your take on him is not that controversial. I think most people really liked him, but there’s definitely some detractors. David Gordon Green talked about that quite a lot actually, how they’d constantly put it in and take it out, and vice versa, based on test screening reactions. I think the lead up to the closet scare, the banter between the two was perfect. Not only did it establish their relationship, but it also sets the audience up to be flipped on their head. That one simple line, I felt, was the biggest culprit of that entire scene, but you actually want to know what takes me out of that scene even more so than the ‘Oh shit’ line? Vicky’s ADR. It’s absolutely abysmal, and i don’t fault Virginia for it nor the filmmakers, ADR is hard. But whew, all of her screams, dialogue when she’s being killed are super distractingly fake. Such a potential great scene, diminished by two relatively minor choices.

As for Allyson, I’m shocked! I LOVED Andi Matichak’s screams as they felt super realistic and not ‘overly’ dramatic, except for her one ADR scene by the mannequins. But for example, the scream she lets out when she sees Michael for the first time? That always gets me. It’s not overdone, there’s no need for it to be. It’s perfect, in my eyes.

Karen’s ‘gotcha’ is perfect, and I think again that’s WHY they chose the takes to make her come off a bit annoying to some, to make that payoff even more.

I guess Alyson did fine, her scream at that moment was good. I liked the music a lot more though, and feel that was what carried his reveal.

You are right that Julian’s line at that moment is what detracted the scene. He was fine as a character, but that line really made the audience laugh, instead of notice that Vicky threw a CHAIR at Michael.

What does ADR mean? I loved Vicky’s death, I thought her screams were absolutely gut-wrenching and you could tell Michael was ANGRY by how he slammed that knife into her back.

ADR is the process dubbing/re-recording lines/audio in post production. That’s actually what Nick was doing a couple of weeks ago, for Michael’s breathing. Vicky’s ADR just always took me out, because I can guarantee you the audio recorded on set was much more realistic, as that was her actual performance. But you can tell she re-recorded it in the studio, and it’s just not that convincing to me haha!

Very interesting! I thought it was all from the actual performance. They edited it well I guess, or I just have a bad eye (ear?) for that kind of thing!

It may be because I’ve worked in post-production a lot, that it just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. It’s all semantics anyway, it’s not that bad! LOL!

Julian was a useless character, in fact they wrote him in part of the trope where black characters always die, but wanted him to survive
