DEADLINE legit just put out an article regarding TENET, and the same thing applies to Kills. If 80% of theaters aren’t open by July (including the big metropolitan areas), TENET moves, that’s what WB is saying. And even IF July comes about, and there’s a big influx in cases/deaths/anything of that regard, you risk theaters being shut down again.
We haven’t even gotten to the prospect of a second outbreak in the fall.
I’m optimistic about October, I believe it CAN happen, but no, Universal and co. don’t have a ‘set and stone’ plan because nobody knows what is going to happen. I’m sure they have contingency plans, but as DGG just said, they’re still trying to figure it out. You can bet had things been normal, the Kills trailer would debut in early June right alongside Candyman. Not to say it couldn’t still do that now, but what’s really the point unless you know 100% that the film can hit October?
Even if they put the trailer out in July/August, the same question arrises. So they (and virtually every other studio) has to make a call, either take the risk of starting the marketing campaign, or delay it to next year. Having a full trailer for this film if it gets delayed a year won’t be fun, and people will be very upset about spoilers, and having to wait so long to see it.
By that metric, THE FOREVER PURGE’s trailer would have been out last month, and it probably wouldn’t have been delayed. It’s clear Universal isn’t confident in July right now, and is waiting, just like the rest of the world to see what happens, and is banking on what TENET does.
Like I said, I’m optimistic as all hell, I’d love for everyone to see it!
