The Definitive Guide to Every Mask In the Halloween Franchise

I originally heard it from Debra Hill herself on an old documentary. So, I naturally assumed she was right. This is a very enlightening thread.

Honored own one of the masks considered for the filming of Halloween H20. Great thread.

Annoying that Morgan submitted fabulous work for H’18 but was told they didn’t want a direct 78 continuation. Why?

Why were promo material hyping up the classic Shape look? Using Courtney’s life cast makes the mask look like JJC and not the Shape. And all the over the top weathering…

I’ll just never get over the mask of H’18 when they had such a prime opportunity to get it right.

I’m guessing because Universal didn’t want to deal with the licensing issues with CBS/Star Trek, William Shatner, and/or whatever patents may still be live with Don Post Studios. This is my understanding as to why we haven’t had a 100% accurate 1978-style Michael Myers mask, and why the ā€œcleanā€ mask that Justin Mabry sculpted for the unused opening sequence looked only marginally like the original. My assumption is camera tricks and minimal close up shots would have been used to fudge the look.

Hey all! Just updated the Tramer section of this post. That’s all I have for now, please let me know if there are any adjustments that I should make or any info that needs to be added.

Hey all, I have added more to the thread and overall improved it. I have added the end scene masks to the Halloween: Resurrection section (I somehow forgot it), added one mask to Rob Zombies H1 section, updated the photos of THE ONE in the H40 section (I previously used Ghost 78 pictures as placeholders) and I updated info in some areas as well. Also, I just noticed the amount of bad grammar in the thread too, and proofread the entire thing again and fixed whatever I could. My apologies!

Happy reading. Oh and as always, please let me know if anything should be added, adjusted, etc. Anything helps!

I’m interested in certain areas of info I had never seen validated (not saying they aren’t true at all, just that I’d love to read/hear the source for context).

Such as how close Chris Morgan came to doing the mask for H40, the original plan with the mask for Halloween Returns, Makek’s interest in his work, etc.

And why did the studio not want an exact 78 replication if the mask was intended to be the same? They could have modified it in anyway they needed to fit the story. I just don’t understand these decisions. H40 was a big letdown for me and one of the reasons was the look of the Shape. It was a ā€œso closeā€ moment when it didn’t have to be. I just can’t wrap my head around it.

I’d also love to read sources on all the affiliated H20 masks, Dick Warlock’s attempt to bring in a Ken Hertlein, etc. On top of that, how does a shooting crew go ā€œbehind the backā€ of the film’s director? Was he MIA? How can one scene be shot without his knowledge or approval? And why did it take DAILIES before somebody (JLC apparently) said ā€œthe KNB mask is horribleā€? I mean, they are all shooting with the damn thing in living color. How did it even get pre-production approval? So many things in the film industry just make me scratch my head.

I think it’s important to remember that we are FANS. DIE-HARD, ridiculous fans. And the cast, crew and producers, whether they are ā€œfansā€ or not, simply aren’t as connected to this franchise as we the fan base are. That’s the only logical reasoning to me, for some of the boneheaded head scratchers we’ve seen across the production of these films.

Rant over. Just curious is all! Amazing thread. I find myself re-reading it about once a month.

Thanks for the reply!

As for the info about Morgan, he’s talked about the mask several times on his podcast and his claims all add up so I added it here. I’d suggest contacting him directly when it comes to that. I believe that they don’t want to have a mask that has direct lineage with the Kirk lifecast. I’ve heard a lot of this back and forth but it seems that for some reason the studio just has something against the captain Kirk mask entirely.

As for the KH Rare I have been debating removing this part of the thread as there seems to be a huge disagreement with the source who claimed it, Ken Hertlein. For some reason, people do not trust Ken and from what I’ve found he is the only one who has said anything about the RARE mask being related to H20.

When it comes to the H6 mask being used in H20, I believe this is talked about in a documentary. When they were doing the reshoots to replace the KNB scenes, they didn’t have a mask and they went ahead and used the H6 mask when they were supposed to wait for the Winston. I don’t know for sure but that’s what I remember from my memory.

Well I for one am a ā€œdiehard and ridiculous fanā€ and personally I thought H40 was fantastic [emoji2371]
I realize some people didn’t like it but I know a lot of people did too. I think without a doubt it’s top four.

They couldn’t use the Kirk likeness cause they’d have to pay Shatner himself most likely

Personally glad that an artist with original work Justin Mabry was brought in to sculpt the mask, and not Chris Morgan. Knowing Chris, he probably would have just ripped off Justin’s work again anyway, and then we’d get some big legal BS involved with the movie.

Yep, and knowing Shatner, he’d probably want some ridiculous amount of money, because he was never big on the idea of a Kirk mask being the Myers mask in the first place.

The kirk thing is really just a huge myth that even the smartest fan believes today…The lawsuit was with DP and the rights to Myers…Shatner joked about how he should ask for money for his likeness and somehow that turned into some huge deal over the years…The truth is the directors want their own deal over the years…Anyone claiming their mask was gonna be used…yeah not touching that but ppl can believe whatev lol If you;re referring to 2018…Nelson said he couldve copied the exact mask with features and all but him and the studio decided not to take that route, That is why even the rotted mask doesnt really have kirk features… IDK why they did that…Everyone is so scared to touch this mask, I think they shouldve just replicated it with some scars…Kills is the first movie to replicate the mask almost to a tee. No other Halloween movie has even tried.

Hope this helps whoever read it

Interesting. I always heard that Shatner made a stink back in the '80s about his face being used, which was why they had to modify the H4 mask so much to hide the Kirk features. The fact that Shatner has refused to sign Myers masks at cons always seemed to further the rumor.

You know, now I’m interested in seeing what a Creep would look like with Nelson’s scarring sculpted into it.

Yeah that’d be awesome, I honestly want to see his take and what he’d come up with if he legit tried to copy the 78 feature for feature then scarred it…I actually might make my next sculpt an honest attempt at a rotten 78

Also another thing that needs fixing, the schoolyard mask, is the blood tears mask, the unused stunt is the Unmasking scene mask, from the looks of it

Unfortunately your suggestions are not correct, they are extremely similar masks but they are not the same. I had the same misconceptions as well a while ago.

the stunt mask being worn in that shot of H1, you can see the missing chunk of hair on the sideburn which the blood tears has

Both stunts have missing chunks of hair.
