Yeah, it wasn’t very scary. I’m watching Haunting of Hill House on Netflix and to me that has me more spooked at times than the new Halloween. I still loved the movie, it just really didn’t give me a build up for a scare. I never really got very tense. Still gonna see again at theatre
The closet scene could have been more scarier if it wasn’t in the trailer and if that boy didn’t yell oh %#%^ Instead we get trailers with that scene, the bathroom scene, the scene with him getting hammer and going next door also, him grabbing Laurie from the door, her shooting at the mirror, her yelling at her daughter for not having security.etc etc. really if you watched all trailers you could piece together the whole movie. That’s what was really sucky.
We also already had a shot of cops jack o lantern head!! Why give all the great parts away in the trailers?? What if back in the early 80’s as part of empire strikes back trailer Darth said I’m your father?? Well that’s what these trailers were pretty much doing
The only thing that bothered me is that the Sartain arch not being foreshadowed enough. It kind of came out of nowhere then it was just gone. Other than that I was happy overall!
It was a good movie over all, but the story should end here, but we all know it won’t. They had a chance to change things for the better & to update & to end it for good, but it still felt much like the same old slasher style movie. Nothing new, just more of the same. Like the coveralls, they should have gone with a completely new look, like a prison outfit or something. They went with a new/old look for the mask so why not the coveralls as well ? After 40 years a psychopath is not going to care what they wear to kill someone, so why the same coveralls ? And Michael was driving in this one as well… Why ? After being locked up for 55 years of his life he wouldn’t know how to drive, but he drove in the first one, So whatever. And I know this is going to anger some people on here, but the music seemed off, it slowed the movie down. May have worked 40 years ago, but it did not fit this movie. In the opening credits it was fine but after that no way!
I just saw the movie today. I really wasn’t impressed at all. I actually expected more.
What I didn’t like.
The fact that they showed Michael’s face
The stupid teenager story line
The goofy black kid
The Dr. subplot
The fact that there was basically no lurking or stalking
The music kind of sucked
The movie overall wasn’t scary at all
I definitely enjoyed the movie. My expectations were low and I was pleasantly surprised.
That said the doctor subplot was awful. That twist came out of nowhere and was so utterly bizarre it took me out of the movie for a little bit. There were other things like some cheesy lines, questionable dialogue but the acting and direction saved it. I think it’s possible McBride was a hindrance more than anything, DGG however is a fantastic director and I hope he sticks with the series for another film. I still liked the film a lot. I have to see it again but it might be my favourite sequel.
It’s actually not as out of left field as it appears. If you know the subplot is there, you begin to pick up on a lot of subtle foreshadowing right from the very beginning. The foreshadowing is subtle, however, which is why it feels like it’s so random.
I hated the Sartain twist and the fact the deputy didn’t survive the film. I really liked the deputy, and feel he would have been an awesome character to keep in future films, he was a likeable guy.
Overall I enjoyed the film. There are things I thought could be better, but as for things I actually hate, it’s only a few. They are:
The Halloween theme playing over the long steady cam take right after the trick or treaters bump into him. It kills the scene. If they had to have some sort of music cue over that, then a cue similar to when young Michael is lurking outside watching his sister in the original film would of been worlds better. That long single note drone, lightly in the background, would of made it way more effective. Then have a hard hitting cue during the kills, then back to the single note droning. Other than that, I loved the music placement in the rest of the film.
Stalking. It’s like every time he starts down the path of lurking or stalking, it’s not given enough time to breathe, and then falls short. It did get a little more tense near the end, but earlier in the film, it ends too soon. So if they had let that breathe, it would of been better.
Will Patton being killed. That was just criminal to kill his character off. He would of been great to carry that lead authority role. Why the hell couldn’t that damn Sheriff pick up Sartain and Allyson, and kill his ass off? He didn’t seem to give much of a shit, so kill him off.
And last, which ties into my number 3, Sartain putting on the mask. I get it, I get why he did it, to know what it feels like. But it came off badly when he pops up with it on. Drop that scene, switch Patton with the Sheriff character, and that fixes my 3rd and 4th hated things.
Yeah, I wasn’t a fan of him either, honestly. In a sense, I got the vibe that he was less of a doctor, and more of a crazy lunatic patient himself. I mean, putting on Myers’ mask? Really? Just one of the many problems I had with the 2018 film. He was no Dr. Loomis, that’s for darn sure, but then again, who ever could be?
They played the mask part too much. Yes he wears a mask, but it was just as much of his outfit as coveralls, it wasn’t treated as something special in the first 2 movies. It only became iconic because of all the other movies and how successful the film became. Hell you could have held up a clown mask, he wore that to kill before. They just made to many Easter eggs in this film. The mental institution scene with mask, the Dr putting mask on. He doesn’t need that specific mask.
Loved the film overall. Hate Sartain, like many others.
The mask could have been a little closer to the original or at least a little more realistically aged.
