How are you guys able to dry brush with latex paints? I’ve gone as far as to purchase the Night Shades paints that were used in the movie but everytime I dry brush these little latex balls accumulate and it ends up killing the texture and smoothness that the H40 and Kills masks seem to have.
My Boogeyman rehaul, first time using an airbrush! Its a bit messy but Im learning the motions. I might end up redoing it later but this is what I like. I wanted to emulate the HK Flashback mask look.
First attempt. Other than a Kirk when it first came out, this is the first MM mask I’ve owned since H4 Don Post.
I say “owned” cause I actually play MM at a local haunted house in October and have been using theirs for years. First a Cinema Secrets H8 mask and then a ToTS H6. I always say I’m gonna get my own every year, but for some reason I’m always broke right around the the start of the season…I was in SH looking for a ST Hopper Hawaiian shirt and saw the ‘78s in person for the first time and just had to have it.
Not overly exciting, I’m afraid. I wanted to keep it simple. I went through 15 or so masks to find the one with the least amount of paints and even more important the least amount of shine. They REALLY do vary! From outright blue lips and grey splotchy noses to almost no highlights at all. Some are matte and others glossy as can be.
Just did a light dry brush on the features and the glue line, then 4-5 thin black washes over the entire mask focusing mainly on the neck area. I didn’t wanna go to crazy, cause the lighting at the haunt will accentuate the lines on its own. Also, after the end of the season(s) it’ll start getting naturally weathered!
What I DID focus on was the hair. I’ve been futzing with it for hours! Every time I walk by it I gotta futz haha! Separated the strands with my fingers, misted with water, patted it down and repeated while watching the H1 TV edit 2 1/2 times before I had to call it a night. Looking at the pic of the back, I hope I didn’t go TOO far. It’s looking kinda frazzled.
It’s starting to come along, but it’s still kinda Steve Harrington on the top there. I’ll keep messing with it. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of the side twists? Being as I’ll be outside for 20+ days, I don’t really wanna use gel or hair spray. It’s bound to rain once or twice during the season and that’s just gonna wash out. Do you think maybe a small amount of Elmers on my fingertips then twist it in?
And a belated “Awesome job!” to everyone here! I’ve been lurking for years, so I’m collectively saying it now. Truly inspiring stuff!
if at all possible i would personally recommend a full rehair. the stock hair is ok but rehaired is always better looking and better quality. as far as keeping the stock hair in place i do think generous coats of hairspray is your friend and then reapplying as needed. you could try glue but in my experience it makes the hair look gross as opposed to messy, kind of like the old don post masks. experiment with less permanent stuff first for sure. once glues in there, there’s no going back. good luck
Good point, thank you. I’ll pick some up tomorrow. If it rains, it’ll only help make the hair look more grungy, anyway, which is what I want.
As far as rehairing, I plan to get another soon to experiment further with. For now this is fine. If I put too much work into it I’m not gonna wanna wear it, ya know? This is gonna be my beater mask that I can sweat in, get makeup on and toss into my car each night without caring too much about messing it up.
I had a customer order an H1 from me, in the process of that, they were nice enough to trust me with one of the masks they already owned. They had a TOTS H40 and wanted it rehauled, I wanted the learning experience, since I’ve only done H1’s so far. Anyhow, this is how it turned out.
